hello, new here

ok, I've had reptiles before( toads, geckos, skinks) but never snakes. but about a week ago, I was sort of dumped a black rat snake( I know, not really a corn but theres no blackratsnakes.com...) he's about 3.5 feet long, but I know they can get to 5 or 6. I put him in and old 29 gallon tank I had, and he right away ate a frozen mouse (which i know he'd never had before!). but I have two questions: are dead oak leaves safe as a substrate if you sanitize them, and, since he will need a bigger cage, how big will it need to be. oh and how thick does the plexiglass need to be.
thanks

Hello and welcome!
I don't think there would be any problem with oak leaves, you can freeze them for a few hours and then lightly mist them and microwave them for a few minutes. That should kill off any wee beasties hiding in them. Aspen shavings from the store also works well, the ones packaged for rodents are usually almost as good a quality as those packaged for snakes and usually about a third of the cost.
I'd say a 40 or 55 gallon tank should be enough room for him.

Hello. Other options for permanent housing could include plastic tubs/racks or manufactured plastic snake housing, such as Boaphile, Animal Plastics, BoaMaster, and such. Black Rats are cool. Post some pics!
