Hi. My name is Ande. I recently purchased two female corn snakes. Recently, as in, today. I researched for a few weeks before getting them so their vivs are set up as nicely as I could get them. However, I've quickly figured out what works and what doesn't. For instance, I'm probably going to get a couple digital thermostats next week.

Anyway, here are some pictures.

Fayth is a hypo sunkissed corn around nine months old. I ordered her from BHB Reptiles. Saw her for all of ten seconds this morning before she burrowed into her bedding. I don't think she's come out since.

Max is an unknown morph (if anybody can guess, please let me know) and I'm not sure when she hatched. She looks about as long as Fayth, so maybe they're the same age? I bought her from Petsmart because about a week ago, I went in to hold one and immediately fell in love. Of course, I'd already decided on Fayth so...that means get both, right? :D

She's pretty happy-go-lucky and thoroughly investigated her viv before disappearing somewhere. Which is... :| Her viv has paper towel substrate so I don't know where she went exactly...? She didn't escape, I know that. o____o See, this is why I'm stressed. I hope I'm a good reptile mommy. -____-;

Welcome, they are beautiful!

Leave them be for a week, except to change the water, let them settle in and get used to their surroundings. They will explore when they are ready, and as hard as it is, let them be!

Do you have them in separate rooms? Since you got each from a different place, they need to be quarantined from each other for at least 3 months.

And a thermostat is a must with UTHs, they don't regulate on their own and can get up to 120° and burn your babies. 87° is optimal for the warm side, take the temp on the glass with a probe thermometer directly over the middle of the UTH. Your cool end will be about 75°, it makes for happy corns to choose where they want to be!

Don't hesitate to ask any questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome and congrats!

@The Cat - I think you may be right about her being a ghost.

@smigon - No, my parents keep the house fairly cold and I was nervous about the temperatures falling too low on the cool side. I have a space heater in my room so I can always keep it at around 75 degrees. Is this okay or do I absolutely need them in separate rooms?

I do have a thermostat though. It's just a dial, and I had a bit of trouble trying to sync the heating pads since there's only one probe. Right now though, there's only a couple degrees of difference and it's well within the proper range for the warm side.

You definitely need them separated in different rooms. If one has a virus or infection or other affliction you don't want the other to catch it.

What are the temps? If your thermostat is analog, I would upgrade to digital that will keep both tanks on the same temp. A digital one is optimum, and the probe thermometers are a must for each tank, under the substrate on top of the glass.

Okay, then I will work on getting them separated as soon as possible. The Hydrofarm thermostat will be here on Tuesday and then I think I can move Max to the living room. But, the temps down there are around 69 degrees. Is this going to be too cold for her?

Fayth's warm side is 87.9 and Max's is 85.5. They have probe thermometers on the warm side and wireless thermometers on the cool side. I don't mind keeping Fayth on the ReptiTemp because it's not that it's working improperly, it's just a hassle with two tanks.

Thank you for the help. I really, really appreciate it.

You are so welcome, so many corn newbies don't realize the importance of proper heating for these guys, so many people come on here with UV lights, heat lamps only, human heating pads, or heated rocks. It has become one of my, well, passions, you could say, helping out a new snake parent with the right way of heating. It is amazing how so many pet stores will tell you that they need the UV lights, heat lamps, or nothing at all!

This is a great place to come for all different information and help. We are all passionate about our corns, so we want all corns and their owners to live happy, healthy lives together!

Will 68-69 degrees on the cold side be okay for her then? Or should I try to run a space heater in that room whenever possible? Or would the UTH help with the ambient heat throughout the cage?

Lots of questions! Sorry. :p

Great. Now I just need to get her out of the log hide of horror. >____< She's been up there since yesterday.

That's fine. It gets down to 65 in my house in the winter.

Yup, that is why the warm side is so important, it is stable so no matter how cool the cold side gets the snake can find a happy medium.

Gaahhh, you got the log of horrors!!! So sorry about that, but at least you know what is up. I really, truly wonder how many people have lost their snake in it for so long that they "tossed the baby out with the bathwater" thinking their snake was long gone and they were re-purposing the tank!

Nanci, I wish my house was 65° 24/7! I have had my bedroom portable AC on for 2 weeks now. I have a bum knee and have been bedridden for about 5 weeks waiting for the word on my MRI about surgery.

Well, we did systematically destroy my room Friday night because my mom believed she'd escaped. And I was so confused because I could've sworn she was in her hide and then "disappeared". After an hour, she scooted down enough that we could see her. But I didn't think to get her out and completely remove the hide. So, we'll give her a couple more days. It's not like I have to feed her right now. I just hope she's not dehydrated.
