Missin her snakes
This is the story:

Me be sleepin, cats knocked over my Gerbil's cage, thus freeing her and having a fun time. My father found her at around 6am with her back wet but fine otherwise. (thank god my cats are indoor and dont know how to kill for crap) I didnt want to stress her much so i didnt take her out jsut gave her fresh food and water, she seemed fine. Well i noticed she was moving but only in 360 circles.. I took her out and she cant use her back legs..they are tucked in and she doesnt have much feeling :(

My question is, Should i feed her off?

I mean, she's eating, drinking, her back isnt broken. But im thinking when my cat picked her up to carry her into the step down he pinched a nerve and paralyzed her..her back isnt broken.
 
One thing to think about is: do you have any poison (like rat poison, bug killer, etc.) around your house that the gerbil could have gotten into? Perhaps a chemical like that could have caused paralysis, and in such a case I would be nervous about feeding her off. In reality the injury is probably due to the cat getting her like you suggested, but if there is even a chance that the gerbil may have injested something bad, I would vote not to feed. If she seems really miserable perhaps you should humanely "put her to sleep," but personally I would vote not to feed.

I hope its just a temporary thing and she starts behaving normally again for you, though. Let us know how things are going.
 
I had a cat take down a parakeet cage and I knew for sure the bird would have to be put down, 24 hours later she was fine. I guess it wouldn't hurt to wait a day to see if she doesn't snap out of it. If she is infact paralized, it has to be your call, but personally, I wouldn't keep her alive.Good luck

I understand what you are saying. In order for her to injest anything (we dont leave any chemicals out becuase we have dogs and cats) she would have had to scale about 3ft, and clawed her way into wooden cabinets for hours.

I dont think i would have the heart to feed her off, but put her down, possibly. But if she is perfectly fine (vital signs and temperment and such ) would i really need to put her own or would it be bad to keep her living?

I hear ya. My cat had my parakeet down his throat, but i managed to get it out and it was fine..lol (years ago)


Well, i figure if her vitals are fine and shes alert eating drinking and happy, why not keep her alive? Hell, doctors keep paralyzed people alive as long as they can live life w/o pain..and from what ive observed, shes not in pain.. :shrugs:
 
It could be paralysis from swelling Jen, my bunny once got his teeth stuck in his water bottle and thrashed around so much he snapped his teeth off and couldn't move from the shoulders down for 2 weeks. Vet said it was just swollen damaged tissues and he'd be fine, and he was =) Least till my bro had him out and didn't watch him and he fell down the stairs and broke his pelvis ~,~ RIP Charelston Barthalomewl Bunny ~,~
 
I wish you luck with all of it, at least she doesnt seem to be suffering....as long as shes a happy gerbil then why not let her live her life out :)
