 1st of all how can tell between male and females and second of all how old do the cornsnakes have to be before they start breeding

At about a year or 2.

About sexing. There are a few ways. Like the differences at the tails. Males tails have a nice flow untill the end. Female tails get abrubtly smaller at the end. It's however untrustworthy. Another one is counting the scales at the tail. Also untrustworthy.
Then there's, uhm, i believe it's called poppin, when pressure is added to 'pop' the thingy out ;) And when it's not it's a female. But also not 100% since the snake might just be stubborn. This can only be done with very young snakes because as they get older and bigger it's harder to do and you might damage the snake. Also, only by experienced people. If you go messing yourself you might end up hurting your snake

And the last thing is actually entering the cloaca with a special tool and see how deep it goes. Again, this can only be done by experienced people for obvious reasons.

So if you want your snake sexed i would advice you visit a vet or someone with experience in sexing snakes.

cheers mate but my big snake is fine with me holing it and the little 1 is very stubborn he tries to jump out of my hands or off my arms can you tell me why he/ she is like that

matty_022001,
If you are asking when a snake can physically breed, some can easily under a year old. That is ONE reason why it is not advisable to house snakes together, you don't want any accidental breeding of a young female since this could cause egg binding and death.
If you are asking when a snake can be bred. The snake should be at least 2 years old, 36" and 300grams.

And, as far as why the young one tries to jump out of your hand and the adult doesn't, it is because neonates are programed for self preservation which means getting away from the monster that is going to eat it. You are a preditor in its little mind. Once the baby grows older and is held often, it does not perceive being held as going to be eaten so is not overly worried about it. Some babies "tame down" quicker than others but for the most part, all of them eventually get there. There are, of course, always the exceptions to all rules but they are not the norm.

Good luck with your new addition.

thankyou for telling me that infomation .... but tinkerbell ( the little one ) has been with tango( the big one ) for nearly all of its life .. i brought tinkerbell a month or 2 after tango

If there male and female you should either seperate them or be prepared to deal with a death female. Or at least $$$ vet costs

no probs i always ask dumb questions... when i brought tango i asked the bloke who sold me it and he sed that tango might be male but he wasnt sure because tango was only 3 months old

Put it this way...you are asking for trouble by keeping them together.

Here are some reasons why:
1. Chance of cannibalism. I would really be concerned about the bigger snake eating the little one...especially right after feeding time when they both smell like a mouse.
2. Stress on them (especially the little one).
3. Stress causes a weakened immune system...so they may get sick easier.
4. If one of them becomes sick, the other one is more likely to become sick.
5. Parasite transmission.
6. Snakes are solitary creatures in the wild...they should be kept as close as possible to their natural habitat.
7. Egg binding in the little one if she is a female and the other one is a male.
8. Aggression toward each other when both are sexually mature (if they are both males).

There are MANY reasons to keep them separate...and NO good reasons to keep them together!

ok but y should they turn on each other if they have been together nearly all o their life and plus the bloke at the pet shop who has got sum himself sed they would be fine together

Yes...it is possible that they could "turn on each other" even if you have fed them together all of this time!

And you can't believe everything a pet store employee tells you! A lot of times they just want to make a sale!

nah thge bloke at the shop must know a bit about his extoics cause he had a albino rat snake and a diamond rattle snake reserved for him aswell as a bird eating spider but honeslty he did say that the snakes would be alriht together and do you think that a 5ft long viarium is big enough for 2 cornsnakes

Unfortunately, Matty, just because a pet store employee has a few nice snakes in reserve doesn't mean he knows enough about corn snakes. Each species has its own requirements and set of issues. The people on this forum specialise in corn snakes in particular and have many years of experience. If you'd rather listen to the pet shop than take advise from these people, perhaps you'd be better off asking the pet shop your questions rather than posting them on here.

Fair Enough But I Came On Ere To Learn More About The Species Of Cornsnakes Ive Got Cause The Petshop I Got Them From Is About 10 Mile From Where I Live So I Cant Get Up There Lol

try feeding them away from each other!

you could try feeding them separately and keep them away from each other for an hour or so afterwards, not that ive tryed it(only got one snake), but i asked that very same question not so long ago and was told it worked out in the instance ... but most litrature ive mulled over recomends (emphasis on recomends) you should keep them apart ...

evry1s gotta start sumwere cornfan, if mattys new to this hes hardley likely to know if hes getting ripped off

Thnx Coral Chrisfor Stickin Up For Me Cause I Am New To This Hobby And I Find Cornsnakes Very Attractive And They Put A Bit Of Life Into A Room With There Amazing Colours If You Know Wot I Mean

yes mate tango ( the big ) one has real vivid orange sadles and tinkerbell ( the little one ) has got real darkish brown saddles but there was a really nice rat snake in the pet shop when i went there last time it was completely white with jet black eyes i wanted it but i had tinkerbell and tango and plus it was 75 pound nah but i really love my snakes to bits and i really dont wanna get rid of them unless i really need to ya know wot i mean
