Why do you think he has a broken rib?
Let yourself and him calm down, then check him over carefully. If he moves in normal fashion through your hands, I'd bet he's ok.
Your Mum is right, and snakes are tough, so try not to worry too much. My integrade king leapt out of the shop owner's hands to land on the concrete floor, and Darren's about 6 foot tall, so it was a big fall. Skeeter was fine but I was worried too until I could see him move normally.

Half the time being brave is a matter of knowing what to do, and doing it in a stressful situation. I deal with that all the time at work, but when Skeeter jumped I was sure he'd be injured and didn't want to look.
Even though you felt so bad you were shaking, you still picked him up George

Yep, just watch him carefully for the next few days or even just hours to just see how he acts. 2.5 feet really isn't that much of a drop and I am almost positive he wouldn't break a rib or get hurt from that. Good luck!

Hey George. I think Damien should be just fine. Your mom is right...snakes are very tough and fall from greater heights than 2.5 feet without injury. I found a couple of snake skeleton diagrams that I thought might interest you. The first one is of a venomous snake, but the skeleton is still basically the same. See how close each rib is to the next? It is possible for snakes to get bruises (although unlikely in such a short fall), but it would be very difficult to break a rib.

As far as the striking, he was striking at you out of fear and confusion, not pain. He got out of his viv into an unknown area, then was stunned by the sudden fall, then a big hand came to grab him. He was just nervous.

It's nice to see someone so concerned for a pet. Rest easy tonight. Damien is likely just fine. :)

I don't think it would hurt to leave him an extra day to calm down. Of course, he probably already forgot it happened. Do you mean he escaped??

tbh nanci, i actually cant remember if i left the viv open and he got from there to my desk or not, I had a bad day today, got kicked out of school, had 4 hours sleep last night due to tooth ache, then this, so things are all confusing atm, I'm about 90% sure i actually went to weigh him then he escaped down the back on my desk, coming back up and then looking balance and falling, i think when i wrote the first post i was just all confused and teared up that i muddled things up, but I'm sure i was about to waigh him before he fell, eather way i was devastated that he did fall, and i will be keeping a very close eye on him.

Damien relies on you to keep him secure in his viv. What do you mean when you say you can't remember if you left his viv open? You're 90% sure that you intended to weigh him, but he may have escaped? What does that mean? Are you on drugs? I don't ask that casually or flippantly. Are you sure you can provide him with the proper care, or should you concentrate on getting proper care for yourself?

yes, I can give him 100% proper care, You know that
I don't know that. I only have your word to go on, but you tell us that you don't even know if you left the viv open. What the heck, man? Don't jump on me because you're vague and have altered recall. You admit that you initially posted in a confused manner. If you don't want to be misunderstood, post in a composed manner. Stop treating the members of this forum like we're like your school chums on IM. We DON'T know you. Your words are ALL we have to go on.

We can all make mistakes, George. I had a multiple escape of 4 snakes in one evening because I was distracted and not careful enough in shutting the feeding bins, another member shut a snake's head between the lid and the feeding tub, and you only have to search 'escape' to see how many of us have had these problems, which are mainly due to just a slight reduction in our usual concentration.
Because of my shift work I've now started to alter the feeding regimes so I don't try to deal with the snakes if I'm rushing about cooking dinner then getting ready for work. If this means they wait a couple of days so I can concentrate on them being safe, I've decided it's safer than me being too busy to feed and clean them in a short space of time without concentrating.
I hope Damien is ok and you recover from your fright.
(And I went through 4 years of wisdom teeth trouble, so you have my sympathy there)

Sounds like Damien will be fine. I've never dropped one of my snakes, but I've seen a few falls happen while they're climbing and exploring inside the vivariums. Cornsnakes are hardier than you might realise. ;)

I suppose it goes without saying that you must be a tad more vigilant about security in future, George :)

Damien is fine, I'm fine, so the thread has done its purpose.
I'm glad Damien's ok, and I'm glad you're ok too. :) These guys are upredictable. I've dropped snakes on a number of occasions, and it's usually their fault! Most of the time it happens with those "backward crawlers". They'll back right out of your hand in a flash before you can do anything about it.

First, I am glad that Damien is ok. Now I would just like to suggest that in the future instead of posting a thread the moment you have a concern and then asking that it be deleted you think before you post. Before you post a thread try and calm down and make some judgements for yourself of the situation, you've been on this forum for long enough and gained enough knowledge to make your own judgments about your snake. Try not to let your emotions run wild when something like this happens, take a moment and think about the situation logically I think you'll find that you are perfectly able to figure most problems out. ;)
