help setting up heat mat and thermostat

Hi All,

So i got my first baby corn snake yesterday!!

I brought him with a snake starter kit which has everything in it... (or so i thought)

The guy at the pet shop told me to attach the heat mat to the outside of the back of the tank, because if its placed underneath the tank, it could overheat and crack the tank :eek1:

Having read alot of info on the internet and on this forum, i now understand that i will need to move the heat mat under 1/3 of the tank and buy a thermostat to montior and regulate the temperture, plus a digital thermometer (i only have a plastic stuck-on one at the moment.. which is rubbish and not acruate))

Im going out tonight after work to buy a thermostat and digital thermometer, but im so unsure on which one i will need to buy and also how to set it all up correctly?!?

Will i need to buy two themometers to monitor the cooler end and the warmer end? Do i need to buy anything else?

Please can someone help and tell me how i set the themostat and themometer up etc.

Cheers

You might be able to find an indoor/outdoor thermometer at a garden store or Walmart. I have this one for all my vivs now- I love it.

This is what you can probably find in a store- they work fine.

This is a nice, cheaper thermostat.

I have one and like it better than the ZooMed 500R- it's a little steadier.

Probably what you can find in a petstore is this:

They work ok- I have two of them running right now.

Keep in mind that at Petco/Petsmart you are going to be paying full MSRP. If you order on line, you can get better prices on the 500R and Flukers thermometer/hygrometer, but then you may as well order the nicer Big Apple products.

For a low cost thermostat I prefer the ZooMed over the Big Apple/ESU round top type. I've heard horror stories about the esu/big apple thermostat failing and leaving the heat mat on full blast. No personal experience with it, just anecdotal reports on varoius forums. Plus the ZooMed is cheaper and does the same thing.

I've had 3 ZooMed 500R's going for over a year, until recently when they were replaced with a Herpstat ND and a new rack. Any new snakes though will go in one of the old tanks or sterilite with the 500R's, as the rack is unfortunately all filled up already =)

Maplins sell a digital in/out thermometer/hygrometer with probe for under £20, here's mine! (ignore the temp, I'm trying to get my incubator temps stabilised)

The Big Apple thermostat has a fail-safe, but it kicks in at 110F. Still- ZooMed doesn't have one at all.
