Greetings, friends!
So, I've been visiting this forum for a few weeks, ever since I decided to get a corn snake. I registered about a week ago so I would be able to use the search function. Now that I have my snake, I figured it was time to become a part of the community. One last thing I would like to say before starting my introduction, thank you all for sharing your knowledge. The husbandry and basic care section has been nothing short of instrumental. On to the introduction!
My name is Jay, I live in the Philadelphia suburbs. I weld aftermarket exhaust systems for a living. I am married to a wonderful woman and we have two boys, ages 3yrs and 15mo, and another on the way.
When my eldest son's african dwarf frog passed, my wife (who is afraid of reptiles to the point where she is a stereotypical television teenage girl about it) decided that if she was going to be a mother of three boys, she might as well embrace it. She suggested getting a lizard or a snake. I had kept a few lizards as a boy, mostly Iguanas and anoles, but a pet snake was my unicorn.
My father was tough as nails, and it wasn't until I was a highschooler that he wasn't prohibiting me from keeping snakes to be a jerk. He had a phobia.
Once my wife said a snake was on the table, I started doing my research. I decided I wanted to get an anery (I don't know why, but all those reds and links and oranges don't really do anything for me) and I found a semi-local breeder on craigslist who had just had a clutch hatch in early September. We told my son we were going to get "him" a snake. Without hesitation, he said he wanted to name him Rocky. At the age of 31, I was finally going to get my snake!
Then it happened. While purchasing bedding, heating, and hides at Petsmart, I saw him (her?), a beautiful anery a little bigger than what I planned on getting, but I feel in love. And he was fifteen dollars less than the breeder's price.
We picked him up this past Saturday night. Sunday morning he was stuck in the "Hide Log of Horrors" (wish I found that thread before I bought it). I broke it open and got him out and he was very angry, striking at the lid on his way back into his tank.
Monday afternoon we had a jailbreak. My wife was in the kitchen, nearly in tears. I moved the couch, calmly picked Rocky up, and returned him to his tank. Thankfully, he seemed quite calm and unstressed. I spent the night suring up the lid with aquarium tubing.
Today, Rocky has spent the day relaxing in his ExoTerra rock outcrop, with the exception of testing my craftsmanship along the lid this morning. He seems unfazed by these last few stressful days. His pictures will be up this time next week after his first feeding on Friday and subsequent waiting period, when he week have his first proper handling.
