Hold Me Back Please...

People should have to pass a test to prove they're not idiots before they can be allowed to care for a reptile, or any animal for that matter.

PJ wow.. all i gotta say, is you have a huge heart here.

Its a shame this had to happen to one of your animals but I am sure every breeder has a few animals that end up like this.
This animal if it did get mites that weekend was from the show and not from your collection. Plus I doubt any snake would survive 2 years with mites like that. I wonder what else they have in their house that brought in the snake mites.

Yeah that is totally not your fault, poeople are ignorant. You don't owe them anything at all. Just educate them on what they did wrong and thats all you can do.. To bad you can't repo snakes..

I feel for you PJ. I know it's frustrating, but I would chock this one up to a 13 year old, punk talking out his arse! I think some people have a nerve blaming others, for the problems they create on their own.

Take it easy and my family will keep you in our thoughts!

Some blonde girl ranted this off..

See, it's kids like that and parents that tick me off! So sounds like the 13 year old just wanted the biggest baddest snakes he could get to show off to people and his parents are indulging him. They probably left the complete care of the snakes to him(big mistake) and now that baby boy didn't do something right, it's your fault! You know, since the Burm is illegal there, how much you wanna bet the mites came from the burm but they don't want to admit that so they're blaming you?! For all you know they're being housed together as well.

Guess what, I think I really agree with you Lynn.. Sounds like the likely story..

PJ, I'm just seeing this thread and read through it.
There is nothing I can say different than everyone has already said, except, I'm on your side here as well.
Not your fault, you are not responsible for their mistakes and owe them nothing.

Don't sweat it.....;)

Walter,
:crazy02: BOUT' CORNS !!

LOL! Thanks for agreeing with my rant.

Wow the stupidity of some people. I'm 15 years old and mature enough to go and research about any animal, reptile, bird, etc. that I might want to purchase. I even take it to the extent of seeing which foods are best, which bedding is best, and anything else I can do to make sure that my animals get the best life possible. God it's called freakin research, we have books and internet for a reason people. Those type of people bug the crap out of me, in the future if I do breed corns or anything. I'm going to try to full extent of my ability that they know how to take care of that animal, hell I'll even go to the extreme of making them pass a test or something of that manner, just to even consider selling them the snake. Now I don't know if that's too extreme but I think it sounds pretty fair. But don't worry about those people they knew darn well what they were getting them selves into, they should have done some research on live vs. f/t food, so that's their bad, but I can see where you're coming from. P.S. Don't quit the reptile business, I'm planning on purchasing some of your corns in the future lol:)

Oh, god! That's terrible to hear... Poor boa... Not much you can do about it, though. Maybe "blacklist" the buyer... Bad reviews on BOI, and warn other "big snake" breeders at local shows? Maybe that's a bit much, though. :shrugs:

RavenSpirit said it best: "Too bad you can't repo snakes." Sending hugs and best wishes your way... Good luck dealing with the ignoramuses!!! (Lol, I've been wanting to call them that since I originally read this threat yesterday..)

Lol, I'm planning on doing something like that when I go to sell my corn (and beauty, if they hatch) babies this year... Something along the lines of proof they have an appropriate set-up (pics, or even see it in person) and a little quiz before I let them take snake (whether they pick it up or I take it to them). Oh, and a care sheet and maybe a small supply of f/t pinks to go with each snake (if I have that much stocked up, anyway).... I figure I won't be selling that many of them before they're a year or two old because I'm so picky, though... Lol. Oh well. At least there's only 29, almost half of which might not be fertile... And I'm already planning on keeping at least 5... =)

Wow... This story is simply ridiculous!!! As was stated before, you've got plenty of people on here (some, like me who are extremely happy customers), that are willing to back you up.

I hope the other party just "dissolves" into the ether and leaves you alone.

Thank you! They have been educated by others as well as myself!

They don't have to pass one to have kids . . .

No, but I sure as heck can make people fill out an "application" to purchase any of my personal collection animals or to "rehome" animals. The animal shelters make you file out a multi paged application...lol

Thank you! Dont worry, I am staying as long as the snakes want and need me to. I know how you feel about your future customers and you have that right. Just keep in mind, most people making a major snake purchase, usually will take at least decent care of that snake. Yet, the "pet" snake purchases are harder to read. Heck, who cares about a $20 corn snake or a $150 boa....but a $1000 cornsnake or a $900 baby boa are a different story. BUT not everyone is that way, so keep an opened mind, offer as much help and good advise as you can give.

Thank you! As for "black listing" customers for their ignorance is a hard thing to do. And YES, I have "repoed" a few snakes so to speak and have made them pay me for it too.

Thank you Fred! Nice to know you are still a happy customer!!! You are welcome back anytime!

Thank you everyone for all your support! For you young members, thank you for taking the time to view this thread and learn and take the experience forward in your adventures with reptiles!

I am going to post and an update on this boa too.

UPDATE FOR YOU ALL 5/13/2009

Good afternoon everyone,

I finally got that call I knew was coming. This morning at 8:12 am, my phone rang. It was the mom of the boy with the boa. I have only met her once; the day of the purchase at the local reptile expo. She really wanted me to come see the boa and she was very sweet and friendly with me. Being the person that I am, about 15 minutes of being on the phone with her, I agreed to stop over. Mind you, they live only about 1/2 a mile down the road!

Once I got there, she took me upstairs to the boy's room. Clean, sunny, lots of EMPTY tanks and a huge, homemade wooden display tank, and "Jules" in a 20 tall. I almost cried! I have NEVER seen a boa so dehydrated in all my life! She was on repti-bark, NO WATER, no UTH of any source, and only a flood light bulb in a 8" black coated "reptile" light dome for her source of heat. I immediately told her that the vet, which had an appointment with this evening at 6pm, was going to make her feel like (pooh)! [They were unable to make this appointment because the boy has a sporting event this afternoon out of town and there is no way I know they are going to make it back in time.]

I reached in the tank and took her by the head so I could a good look at her mouth. Yup, mouth rot! Not as bad as I was thinking but oh my god, was she dry! Her skin which should have shed off by now, was so dry that it was crinkling under my hands. She wrapped herself around my wrist, she wanted me help her, I just know she knew what I there for. I place her back in and saw that the dry skin was now breaking up. I worked on her and was very surprised that I didnt have a bloody girl in my hands. Her belly shed was the only part with any moisture in it at all. Her eye caps once off reveled a definitely dehydrated boa. I have never seen a boa with "dry" (new or old) eye caps. I have seen a ball python or two but not a boa.

Once completely shed, she didnt look nearly as bad as she before I shed her. Her top is still very dry. I listened to her heart and lungs, treated her mouth, and offered her a list of things she MUST do if she wants this boa to live. [Mind you, all his tanks are empty!!] She told me they might want to pick up a few "smaller" snakes at the local expo again this coming August!

Keep in mind, this boa does not have a 24/7 heat source, had no water bowl, and was infected with mites for the last 2months or so. They dont understand why she was not eating. "Jules" (her name with us) looked pretty well of not eating in two months and having mites. Yes, she has a case of mouth rot, but not the worst out there either, and they should be seeing the vet by the beginning of next week do to her 3 sons' activities and such.

So as of this morning, "Jules" has a complete shed, no visible mites, and mouth rot. The mom knows the boa needs 24/7 heat, a big enough water bowl for the snake to into, keep her on paper towels or newspaper until the mite issue is completely over for 30 days at least, how to treat and care of the mouth and dehydration, and see the vet. She even offered to pay for my time!

If I get another update, I will definitely fill you all in too. Thank you all for the emotional support and friendships!

PJ

Wow, PJ. It was awfully good of you to stop by and give your time. Glad you were there for Jules and hopefully this lady will start taking care of Jules the right way.

I am also glad that she didn't try to pin this on you and that she was nice enough to try to compensate you for your time.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping with all my heart that your next update is one in which Jules is healthy and growing!!!

PJ I agree with Fred that it was nice of you to stop and help them out. I'm hoping the mom comes to realize that her son just can't handle this kind of responsibility yet. Maybe next time she calls you can offer to take it home or buy it back?? I feel so sorry for that poor snake. I'm hoping your next update says "I took Jules home and she is in my care now." :)

wow. PJ..That poor Boa..I cant imagine what that was like for you to see..I dont know how you do it lady...
I have been reading this since you posted it, and I have yet to give you my 2 cents..
I am really..REALLY GLAD that you took the time to go and see the 'nake.
I cant believe you did this all with out loosing your cool.
It really sucks when someone does this to an animal..especially an animal that you once were responsible for.
IMO...ONLY you could have done been the person to help out.
It seems that everyone in the snake world should have their own "PJ"..(and I am glad that I have the origional)
But seriously..
YOU
Give this your all..
and the passion you have for your animals, and even animals that you have never owned..well its hard to match.
I am really glad that you did this..that no matter how many times you seem to get beat down that you never give up and GO FORTH and still want to help.....That shows some True dedication...enough said....
I think the world needs you PJ.haha..now dont go out and sell out..
(LMAO)....but ......I guess what I am trying to say is..
that I am glad you dont give up. (on the animals)
and This just shows people..that when they deal with you and your business/love.....they DO GET 200+%...
I feel very fortunate.......

IT will be the PJs of the world that will inspire people..I know it worked for me.
Keep up the great work...and keep us posted.
Love you
~~Amanda:cheers:

It almost seems like the mom means well, but didn't do the additional-parent-research one would need to do when you child has a pet.

Do you think she would respond well to a purchase list, a care sheet, and assistance with a care schedule?

Maybe if she had it posted next to the snake with times and instructions, she would be more able to provide it with proper care?

Just a thought.

Thank you for being spectacular PJ. I'm sure Jules appreciates it.

Gotta love having to weigh how far we should go to do it FOR them, and where the responsibility of the previous owner ends!

*hug* Keep us posted!
