Horny toad

Well, not really. Horned lizard is more accurate. Found this guy a couple of weeks ago on a hike. Kristi saw him first and alerted me to him, at which point I involuntarily dropped Zeke's leash and was down on the ground after him. Luckily, Zeke did not run away! We found babies later, but I'm don't have the pics of those, and friends haven't yet made them available. These guys sure are cute! Sorry for the grubby hands.

I grew up in S.E. New Mexico/West Texas with those things. The pics sure do bring back memories. I remember that some would spit blood if you aggravated them, but usually if you held them and pet them between the eyes they would fall asleep. Thanks for the pics.

Glad you enjoyed it, guys. They sure are fun to hold. The first one I ever caught ran to hide from my dog, and since I was standing still, it hid alongside the arch of my right foot. Even though I've handled a few, I'm still always surprised by just how hard those little "horns" are. I've read that they can squirt blood, but I've never seen any do it. Maybe you really have to torment them. :shrugs:

I've never seen one in the wild, but we have people bring them into work occasionally(then we tell them to put them back immediately!). They are soooo cute! We actually have people come in sometimes that insist that we are keeping horny toads and that it is illegal. They just won't believe that they are bearded dragons.
