how did you convince your parents, spouse, etc?

Since your Dad is agreeable to the whole idea, you should be working with him. Believe me if anyone would know how to get your Mom to do something she doesn't want to it will be him ;).
The biggest obstacle is getting it in the house-after that its all easy.
You might also be surprised just how much Mom's are willing to give in with a combination of responsibility and Puppy Dog Eyes :).

I was the one that needed some convincing.. My Wife asked a few times and said she thought they were cool..After a few years of sticking to my guns, my Wife says, " Hey Dear, if we got a snake my Mom would stay away.." Without a second thought or hesitation I said, " When are we getting a snake? This weekend? "

As funny as the above statement seems it is 100% true!

Regards

My husband made a fatal mistake....he said, "Hey hon, there's a reptile show in town. Wanna go?" Second fatal mistake...."Jeez, these things are cheap. Wanna get one?" The rest, as they say....is history.....Now he just says....."When are you going to stop?"

Well this didnt go so well. I think it was a mistake for me to just ask if I could get a snake, and she asked me if I lost my mind. And I dont know, I just asked her why and she said that she doesnt like the way they look and everything. And she said that they belong outside, but I said that they were captive bred and are pets like dogs are. But I dont think she is ever going to let me get a snake, she just wouldnt feel comfortable with it being inside the house even if it was in my room.

If all else fails, wait until you are grown and have your own place. Then you can get as many as you want. I know it seems like a long time to wait, but it will go by faster than you may think. Seems like I remember being 14 years old...barely. :sidestep:

ha, im still in the process of talking my wife into letting me get a cornsnake. and its not going to well.

With a spouse- just wait until the first time you don't get an answer- and say you took that as a yes :grin01:
You can always work out the compromises later ;).

How do you convince.........

What I did was call my partner from the pet store and say they have a free cornsnake to adopt that belonged to a school.
He was busy at work at the time, I think only heard the word free!!
So she came home with me. ( I have a bearded dragon that broke the ice).

About two weeks ago I wondered aloud if I should raise my own mice.
Now we are up to 5 snakes........3 corns, 1 ball python and a green tree python. He said you might as well if you are going to have 15 snakes

So I guess I have ten more to "get". Let's see where do I begin.....albino ball, another chrondro, and what was that neat one a Savu python, and so many colors of corns!!!

Karen & the above mentioned snakes.

Back in the day when posting on the corns forum involved riding your mammoth to appropriate cave and chiseling something into the wall, right? I'll bet the animated smilies were a challenge though :grin01:

Sorry to hear it, I have another idea- do you have any friends, relatives, teachers or someone who would let you keep your snake at their place? It just sounds like your Mom has her mind made up and doesn't want a snake, period but maybe it'll work if she doesn't have to look at it. :shrugs:

Yeah, it was hard to get those cave walls to move! :shrugs:

Pretty easy for me. But my wife is used to my wanting different things. When i first met her i decided that i wanted an aquarium. Then i was breeding fish. Next thing you know i got 4 or 5 tanks sitting around with air pumps and filters going it got to the point where you couldnt hear the tv over the fish tanks.

Then i tried the mister mom thing and took 3 months off while she worked. After spending all that time with my little girl and realizing we where putting away two and a half dozen eggs a week. I decided i wanted to keep chickens. So i converted an old tool shed into a coop. Set up nest boxes and began raising Leghorns. It wasnt long before i was getting 40 to 50 eggs a week. I got so sick of eggs and fried chicken that till this day i limit my wife to one chicken based supper a week.

I have allways wanted corns but never seen them offered as pets untill i moved to FL.

I just brought my frist snake home and told my roomate over my dead body is it going back. She knew I was serious so she didn't say anything, although we haven't talked much lately. ....oh well! :)

After much adu about something, just try getting her to hold one. I am a mother of an 11yr old daughter who wanted a snake from about the age of 3. Although I had rescued many ground toads from the garden and freaked my sister out with crawlies from the cellar, I too was wary of snakes. I make a deal that if she could care for a mammal for 9mo and keep her fish alive(W/out my help) I would indulge her. The Hamster and the Rat we had did not
last long but the fish are still here. Something lived, how could I tell her NO! So we got a corn snake. All it took for me was to hold one and get over my preconceptions. The snakes now live in my room and there will be no more mammals from here on out. I have 2 cats and a pit bull that is 9. I will love and care for them until their days run out, yet from here on out it is reptiles and snakes for this mom. No more pet hair or dandruff to comb out of the couch!

Lived on my own when I got my first one, so there was never an issue.

Had two by the time I met my now wife. She's fine with them. Quite happy to handle them but leaves the cleaning and feeding to me. Which I don't mind, as it give me license to get more as, after all, it's me that looks after them!

Current snake count is 7 in 5 tanks.

It's more the space the tanks take up she moans about .....

I have been saying for my whole married life(26 years) that I wanted a snake. My wife was dead set against it. She is scared to death of snakes. So I finally just stopped bringing the subject up. So this past year on my 51st birthday, my youngest daughter was asking my wife what to get me for my birthday. Since I am a particular, picky bastard, no one ever knows what to get me. My wife actually suggested a snake. So my youngest and oldest daughters went together and bought me a reverse okeetee hatchling complete with the viv and all. Needless to say, I was very surprised and pleased! The rest is history.

when i first got in to corns at the age of 15 it took allot of convincing to get my parents to let me. My step mom has a irrational fear of reptiles and snakes. But with the promise that they would never have to help me with any thing that has to do with my snakes and the promise that they would stay in my room and never be seen they eventually caved in and let me get my snakes. Only trouble i had was when a hole clutch of hatchlings escaped and we where finding them all over the house.

my hubby is great... he just agrees to everything i want to do LOL

my son's been asking forever for a snake, so now that his older sister has moved out (earlier this week) i told him he could have a snake... then doing the research for his new snake... i fell in love and decided i want one too :D

then my little girl (6) decided she wants one as well so..... a three snake home we will be!
