How did you get started keeping Corns?

I have handled snakes here and there over the years by way of people who had them, etc. and was never frightened by them. Saw some Corn hatchlings at a Petco and noticed that a couple of them had shriveled up necks. Went home and Googled it and found out what was wrong. Found out that they did have mites and the kids at the store supposedly treated it. But by the time I went back, they were all gone.

Started researching Corns because my curiosity had been piqued. After several months saw a batch of hatchlings who looked good. Asked to see them and they were real friendly and clean and in clean bedding....got a viv ready then went back and bought Lavagirl.

I got started when my daughter came in the house screaming that there was a snake in bushes. I ran outside to see and captured a small snake about 10 inches long. I go hiking occasionally and have seen the snakes that live in our area and knew this was diffrent. So i went on line and did some research and found out it was a corn snake. Ive never been in to the normal pets and i once owned a Nile monitor so i decided to keep it. It must have escaped from someones tank because i live in the Los Angeles. That was about four years ago and now we have nine corns and 9 leopard geckos (and always looking to add more) if i can sneak them past my wife. Needless to say I'm hooked and plan on breeding this season. I hope they are as easy as my geckos

Mine's a bit of a sob story! I was living in a flat/appartment so obviously couldn't have a "regular" pet like a cat or dog, and I was very lonely. I wanted something to look after and spend time with, as well as all the many reasons why anyone gets a pet.

Visited a few pet stores, toyed with the idea of getting love birds or chipmunks, then I was introduced to snakes. Well, I loved cornsnakes instantly and it was only a matter of time, a few books worth of reading up and meeting and greeting a few reputable breeders before I chose the one I wanted. He's now 6 years old now and quite the handfull!

:)

Hey there! Yeah, we can't have dogs or cats where I live, but my brother Dean/Roy Munson has had corns off and on since he was fourteen...well they were called dinosaurs back then, but still... :grin01: He tried to pawn off his lumpy ghost on me, but I resisted the temptation and for my birthday he and I both got an Abbott's Okeetee apiece. :)

I got started about a year and a half ago. I've always had an interest in snakes, but never thought I'd actually ever have any, because I also very much like rats (also the reason I will never attempt breeding my own feeders, they'd all end up being keepers, lol). I didn't think I'd be able to get past the feeding mice/rats part. Through college I had several pet rats. With the help of my son's constant asking, and just being able to actually hold a little corn snake hatchling at a pet store, I finally gave in. And luckily, I've come to accept the whole feeding rodents part of the equation, although a part of me still feels kinda bad every feeding day. I'm up to 9 corns at the moment, but that's sure to grow over the next few years as I get some breeding projects setup.

I've always been fascinated by snakes. My first foray into snake keeping was a wild caught western hognose when I was 12. A neighbor had caught it and was thinking he could make me squeal with it. He held it out to me and asked me if I wanted it. I surprised him when I said yes and took it. I got into corns just over a year ago, after initially being resistant to owning one. I was looking through a reptile book and they had a picture of a wild corn and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. Now I like corns because you can get so many beautiful morphs for a relatively small amount of money. I've only got two right now, but want to get some more as soon as I find some more flat surfaces to put a tank on...

Real impressive. To return the kindness, here's a pic of Pumilio when she was 4 1/2 years old. She's holding a big ol' normal I used to have.

Watch it Mister! We have pictures of you as a youngster too! Haha although I gotta admit, our sister has some worse kid pics that either of us. Jeez I was a cute kid, and it only got better! :crazy02:

I've been intrigued with snakes since I was old enough to catch them but my parents never allowed me to have one. So... when my son asked for a snake I said "absolutely"!!! :crazy02: After doing a lot of research we purchased a yearling pair of Anerys from our local reptile shop. Now we have a reptile room with 50+ corns in our house. What an addiction. :)

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.. My Wife told me her mother would freak out and not show up very often.. Within a week we had our first corn and peace and quiet! Pity..

Regards

Some of you already know this since it hasn't been too long ago.
I used to keep snakes with my ex, when we split he got the critters and I got the kids.
Well I decided it was time to get another snake and start introducing my girls to the fun of reptiles. I happened to see an ad for baby corns from a local breeder(Don and Angel Gallagher) and after checking out their site ordered an amel hatchling. By the time he was delivered he was accompanied by 2 snows, (and I had purchased a pair of garters in the meantime lol). That was 6 months ago and now (not counting one MIA, one deceased and 2 sold)we have four kingsnakes, 4 ratsnakes,a hybrid, a BP, and 28 cornsnakes with more on the way. Now THAT is proof of the addicting power of corns :crazy02: :shrugs:

My son got me interested in snakes. We had gone to a reptile store to look at some bearded dragons, he saw some corns and decided that he wanted one. My daughter then decided that she wanted one so we picked one out for her.......

That was 39 snakes ago and I have more corns on the way! Just another testament to the addicting power of corns!

It all started when I was in college (sorry long story). An albino king snake named Lucifer. And he was a very spiteful little fellow. My fraternity brother bought him and even though he constantly struck at people that walked by his viv, I fell in love with snakes.

I went to his breeder. A 30ish drunk who lived in his mother's basement. He had dozens of poisonous snakes and bragged he didn't have any anti-venom in the house. Also he had albino cobras which he intentionally hit with a stick to make their hoods appear. Needless to say he was not a good person to be around or deal with. All I can say is he had some amazing pets though. He had 2 albino anacondas, an albino green tree python, dozens of red tail boas, a monitor lizard, many other snakes (I can't remember), and the most amazing live ....

..... 2 headed pine snake. It was about 3 feet long and he said he had, had it for about 2 years. While I was there he fed both heads. It was incredible. He made the news the next week for a human interest piece. I never went back to see him. He really was a frightening person. But my boa was wonderful. I sold him when he was 6 yrs old and larger then I could care for any longer.

2 boas later I stopped as my new wife was not a snake person. Thankfully I now have 2 beautiful daughters 4 and 2. They provided the perfect reason to restart my love of snakes ... 1st purchase was a snow motley '05 hatchling. Thank you Rich Z!

The herp additction started with our frog, Gordito (see pics in General Chit Chat if you want). It was the end of our freshman year of college and Jonathan saw her at a pet store and wanted her off the bat. I told him if she was there after Easter break he could consider it his birthday present. Needless to say he got the frog. Then in 2004 we decided to check out a local herp show to see what they had. Got a male Surinam Toad we named Squishy in May and got Sparks, our first corn in August. Since then we've mostly had corns. We're now up to 50+ snakes that include corns, ball pythons, western hognoses, boas, and the most recently added albino burm. We also have 3 leopard geckos, a female Surinam Toad, baby red-eared slider, baby sulcatta tortoise and some huge feeder fish that I saved because they were pretty. That's about it. I got my family hooked in March last year and it's been downhill for them too - I'm still selling my dad's hatchlings.

When I was about 7-13 years old I had reptiles of various sorts. Then a year and a half ago, I wanted to get a snake again so I got a Cal-King. Shortly after, the girlfriend and I broke up (not herp related) and I went nuts because of my new independence. In my snake frenzy, a co-worker gave me his adult female corn. That started the corn adiction. I'm not sure how many corns I have now, and I'm too tired to count, but I have 75 snakes overall, the majority are corns. I also have some Kings, Milks, Boas, and my personal favorite, African House Snakes.

I had to get rid of my cockatiels (birds) after several fights with my b/fr about their noise, besides that in our new apartment I didn't want them to fly free around the house anymore because of their poo, that was no fun for them anyway. I only gave in after my b/fr told me maybe I could have some other animal that makes no noise or defecates around the house. That would be a snake! I've always been fascinated by them but never thought of owning snakes. My b/fr was relieved to close this easy deal 'cause he thought of only 1 snake, but then I got addicted... I keep saying; but they are not noisy and don't poo at weird places!

Over the summer (2005) my husband and I camped pretty much every other weekend. This one place up in Ojai is amazing & I was sitting up one morning reading with my sister in law and the park ranger came over & said that they were having a reptile show at the station across the street.

I love pretty much any kind of animals. Any time I can see them I will pretty much visit. So we dragged our husbands out of the tent & went.

They had a bunch of reptiles saying which one's make good pets & which one's don't (like the 8 foot monitor he had named Brutus).

They had a corn (a nice young amel) & my husband was in love.

So yeah, this was supposed to be his hobby, I kind of took over :D

I have always been interested in snakes but parents wouldn't let me have one. Got married and my wife happens to like animals and reptiles too after setting up an aquarium, getting a dog and the two cats my wife had already we had a zoo almost then i bought her a Tortoise in july '05' this xmas she thought she'd get me something special so bought me a corn i got to choose it though and chose a caramel male, I am going to get a female in the summer and am already looking into getting a royal python (most of you guys call it a ball python) just trying to find one at the mo they are hard to find over here in the uk.
