Some of you know that I am into taxidermy/skull/skeleton collecting, cleaning, etc. You may remember my Boris the Badger post? I think Nanci asked me how that was going...he is still under construction (ha...) but I spent yesterday afternoon cleaning some bob cat skulls. There were 4 in this batch, we managed to get 3 cleaned. I have included photos for those who aren't squeamish lol. If you are, you were warned

Bucket'o'heads

Group shot...there is a beast of a cat in upper right hand corner

Beast compared to the other larger skull, almost the same size even without head meats!

I want a bobcat soooo bad.
I've spent the last week skinning and fleshing out a road kill coyote. Unfortunately it was my first time skinning anything bigger than a snake, so it isn't perfect, but I am proud of myself!

I'm excited to see all these when they are cleaned up!

I have at least 8 bobcat skulls in my freezer. I am keeping the beast and will probably have the rest up for sale :)

Absolutely fascinating.

I have a few skulls, bobcat and weasel probably the hardest to come by. Roped down to the bottom of a large old dry abandoned cistern well, way back in the woods. Dozens of rabbit and armadillo skulls in there, too.

I have a whole bobkitty in my freezer, roughly 7 lbs as well as an entire opossum. I have loafs of skulls from various creatures, bobcat, coyote, etc.

I would LOVE a snake skeleton! Do any of you have one or can prepare one for me? What is the cost?

smigon: I don't have any snakes at the moment but could probably find something. Is there something in particular you are looking for? I do have my ball python buried in my back yard that I've been thinking about digging up (morbid much?) but I would keep him for myself.

Those are neat. I'd like to see them when you're done with them.

If and when the first of my snakes dies, I would LOVE to get its skeleton cleaned and mounted. I think I would enjoy getting into taxidermy.

I also have a cat who is 15ish years old and I'm thinking that when she dies, I'd like to have her skull cleaned so I can keep it.

I will most definitely post photos of them finished :) My first venture into this was a roadkill badger which I've posted a thread about. Things kind of spiraled into taxidermy from there lol.

I have seen full snake skeletons and they look so cool put back together, or a venomous snake with large fangs. I have NO idea the cost of any of this, so it may just be wishful thinking on my part.

Do you use beetles to clean your skulls? I can imagine the smell of boiling them!

I have three cats buried in my yard, I have thought about digging them up but that thought was fleeting. They were my babies and I don't think I could disturb them. Besides, they all have flagstones over them, I have 6 other cats right now, so within a decade I figure I will have a "catio" to put my yard furniture on! (yes, morbid A LOT!)

I do use beetles yes, never boil. I have thought about doing water maceration which is using warm water to rot the flesh off but not boiling. The smell doesn't bother me much. I just went and checked on them tonight and it 'stinks' but I did leave the brain in there for them, which adds to the smell.

Snake skeletons are cool for sure, but tedious and time consuming...all they are is a skull, vertebrae and ribs lol!

A girl here last spring was profiling deer skulls as her undergraduate project. She did the same thing. It smelled pretty bad but she was really enjoying herself lol.
