how long will she last?

Death Eater
im going out of town on tuesday, and i want to take my snake. but i dont know how long she will last with out the heat. i was going to put her in a box and when i get there, set up the tank. its about 8 hours till i get there. also incase anything were to happen to the heat source, how long can she be with out the heat? thx in advance

Please please PLEASE be careful!!!! I was traveling three hours with my first snake in a car, and it turned out it was too hot and he died. DO NOT keep your snake in 95+ degree weather FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES. It's pretty warm in Texas this time of year, so you'll want to use your air conditioning. Just keep the snake in a small container, and put that inside a styrofoam cooler. If you are using no air conditioning, put a small ice pack on one side. If you are going to be leaving the car with no air on for any length of time, TAKE THE SNAKE WITH YOU. Like, if you stop to gas up your car, make sure the snake's container isn't in direct sunlight and you don't go inside the gas station to eat or whatever without taking the animal with you. The snake will be fine with no other heat source for the length of the trip. It is better for him to be a bit too cold for a while than it is for him to be too hot and...well, dead. PLEASE don't make the same mistake I did!

Snakes actually tolerate cold far better than heat. I don't think you're going to get freezing temps in Texas at this time of year, and I know mine have done fine with temps in the 60's.

thx for the info, and i always take my snake everywhere, well ive only had her for like 3 days lol, but if im just going to the store or something its fun to see ppls reactions at the store, and even at blockbuster lol. hell no am i going to drive w/o the air con. its really hot here. do they need the heat to survive, or is it only to digest properly?

You wouldn't want to keep a snake with temperatures too low, because it causes problems, along with respirtory infections and poor digestion. However, an 8 hour trip at the lower end of their range wouldn't hurt.

Also, make sure you're not overly stressing your snake by taking him out and about with you. I'd let him settle in for a bit before handling him too much.

Manson...

PLEASE take Fly's advice to heart !

2 weeks ago I learned a painful lesson about how quickly a snake can die from heat in a car. I lost a new hatchling because I left him in my car for 15 minutes (fifteen!) in a car with a window open in 82 degree temps !

It was a beautiful little Jungle Corn...I was crushed and could not believe that it happened. The heat build up inside a vehicle is just too much for them.
I still feel terrible about it...a very hard lesson learned.

Take care...Mike P.

If you are taking your snake out in public be careful!!! A lot of people have phobias. Even a cat or dog can get you in trouble with allergic people or people with young kids, but a snake is even less welcome to most people. The smart thing is to leave it at home IMHO

Get a heat pack. Place it in a bag and put the snake (In a traveling case ofcource) on top of that and close the bag. I live in Holland where it can get pretty cold even this time a year and i used it on a trip to the vet. Worked good for me.

Please take this the way it is meant.

Jicin,

This is not Holland...

MM lives in the southern most part of Texas. Current daytime temps down here are between 92-100F and only drop to the upper 70s or low 80s at night. Advising him to put a heat pack in with his snake is absolutely NOT the correct action to suggest. Such an action would quickly lead to the death of the snake where we live. If anything he would needs a cold pack.

Your participation in the discussion is welcomed, but please keep in mind the geographic differences between were you are located, and where the poster is located.

Oh. I guess TX stands for Texas. No ofcource you shouldn't use a heat pack when it's hot outside. Pretty obvious to me. I thought manson_midian had a problem with the snake 'beeing out of the heat'. In that case get him back in the heat with a heat pack.

Lucky Texans. We're still only getting down to about 85-90 at night. *ugh*

And Jicin, you're right. He was originally concerned about the snake being out of the heat, but it really is too warm already to be worried about that.

Aaaand... Manson, where are you heading for your trip? I realize 8 hours isn't all that long in Texas, but if you're going somewhere, such as the mountains, that will be cooler and if you're travelling at night when the temperatures really drop, you may need a heat pack then. However, if the temperatures don't drop too much the snake will be fine until you reach your destination.

All I have to say, or plead, is please don't take your snake with you if you will be gone less than a week.

Once someone gets a new snake it should be left alone to relax and get used to it's surroundings for at least 3 days. If you've only had it for 3 days it should still be sitting in it's cage, not traveling all over with you to Blockbuster, etc.

An 8 hour car ride would be especially stressful for your snake.

Please think this over a little more.

yea sorry bout that, its just shes always in her hide, so i thot that maybe if i held her she would think im not going to hurt her and she would come out more, also she wont go to the warmside, shes always on the coolside, and at nigth she doesnt come out also. so you guys say that i should give her 3 days to be too her self? also the guy told me to feed her already, but she wont take the pinky, and i dont want to leave it there caz its a live one and im worried it might hurt her. they dont carry any frozen ones here, and my mom dont want to keep dead mice in the freezer.

thx a lot too all yous guys for the advice.

A pinkie won't do any harm to a snake, even a hatchling. The little things can't even hardly move yet, and they don't have claws or teeth to take a chunk out of the snake.

If she won't go into the warm side, it could just be that she prefers cooler temperatures. However, make sure they aren't too high. How do you measure the temperature? And what is your setup like, such as kind of cage, type of heat source, number of hides, etc? That may have something to do with it.
