I was just checking out the serpenco site for all the corns he has and i noticed a "hurricane" butter motley. What detail classifies it a hurricane motley over just a motley. thnx in advance

joe,
The name "hurricane" refers to a motley whose saddles are extremely elongated leaving only a small row of round spots down the snake. I have a hurricane motley snow I picked up last year.

a bit more...

From what I've been told, the hurricane look is not just the circle, but another circle (or more like an oval) around it. On the snow pictured above, notice that the white circles are then surrounded by another pink circle. (This is why they are also sometimes called "bullseye.")

Also, on the ones I personally think are most attractive, on each saddle the center ends up fading to be the same or similar to the ground color. This really makes the outer circles stand out and I like it.

Don of SMR has some really awesome pics of hurricane-patterned snows, anerys, and amels in his photo gallery at www.cornsnake.net The motley (anery hurricane) and motley (snow hurricane) are the most obvious examples. :)

I would imagine a hurricane butter motley would have white circles surrounded by yellow or orange-ish circles.

These would be really cool in solid yellow (no oranges) and white. Any pics, Rich? :)

My Butter Motley project........

This Motley male het amel and Caramel was bred to his amel offspring het Caramel and Motley this year.

I also bred his Caramel son het amel and Motley to another of his amel het Caramel and Motley daughters.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

For a long time I just didn't feel any need to specifically identify an offshoot of the Motley corns as being 'Hurricanes'. But after a few incidents at herp shows, I think I learned a valuable lesson about marketing.

Potential Customer: "Do you have any Hurricane Motleys here?"

Dumb Seller (me): "I don't use that particular name, but these Motleys here have the pattern that everyone else is referring to as 'hurricanes'."

Potential Customer: "Oh darn! I really had my heart set on buying some Hurricane Motleys, though. Do you know if anyone else here at the show has them?"

Dumb Seller (me): *Grits teeth and smiles, but doesn't say a word and only shakes head.*

So if someone wants Tornado Motleys, Typhoon Motleys or whatever, heck, I've got them. Just give me a moment to print up the labels. I may even start categorizing them as category 1 through category 5 Hurricane Motleys.

And people blame us breeders for all of the names we come up with......

Doesn't matter what you do, someone will find a way to not be happy with it. In the above case I would rephrase "potential customer" to "annoying stupid person who I have to deal with to put food on the table."

I know I will have to deal with stupid people at work, no matter what job I have or what profession I'm in. I love this hobby, and that's why I won't ever let it be a profession to me. This is my escape from being forced to deal with stupid customers. ;) (And I'd bet that at least a few times I've qualified for that category in your mind, hehe.)

(and maybe I'm venturing back into that territory again, but...)
IMO there's a noticeable difference between "plain-old motley" and "hurricane motley." They are distinctive enough for a dolt like me to notice, and would probably even pass a "brown bag test" easily, so I do like the coined name.

But I wouldn't be so stupid as to not buy one that had the look I wanted, just because someone hadn't labeled it as such. (?!?!! ...wow that IS stupid!)

I'd probably instead be happy that I could get such a specimen without having to pay extra for the label. :)

I hope at some point you'll be selling some motley pewters with the "hurricane" pattern and don't label them as such, just so I can get them cheaper. ;) (Just picking on ya, hehe.. like I said, you can't win, LOL.)

Well, I got some photos of one in my camera, so that's half way to getting a photo up here. ;)

One of these days I'm going to go to a show and take 10 identical looking animals of a new cultivar and put 10 different labels on them. Just to see what would happen. Then whichever name sells first, that's the name I'll use for that animal.

Heck I tried something like that with the Charcoal Ghosts. Half of them I labeled as Charcoal Ghosts, the other half I labeled as Phantoms. Neither ones sold, so I guess it's the animal and not the name....

Hurricane Motley Pewters?? I'm getting a visual of what something like that would look like, and all I can say is that I hope it is the name that catches people's fancy! All I can visualize is some funky gray looking corn snake with indistinct circles down the back.

Now why didn't someone name "Hurricanes" as Circle Backs like in the leopard geckos, or visa versa? Hey! Maybe Hurricane Leopard Geckos is the ticket!

You want a good marketing name?

Hmmm, yellow circles down the back? How about "Pac Man" corns? ;) I can hear people buying them up like hotcakes, accompanied by the "wacca wacca wacca" sounds!

Ya, "hurricane pewter" in my mind would be a nice smoothly-colored silver snake with bold black hollowed-out circles down the back. (Sounds as easy as the original candy cane projects, eh?)

oooooo.....now I am thinking Candy Cane Hurricane Motley....
THAT would be sweet...one of these years!

Most definately worth the extra $25. Unfortunately, I can't afford a "regular" butter motley, let alone a "Hurricane". I'm just very glad I managed to "steal" that caramel motley adult male from you (he's doing great, by the way). Just give me a few years and I'll be able to hatch out some butter motleys of my own. I have an '01 female that's het butter and stripe that will be his mate next year and I'm looking forward to that clutch with great anticipation!

That's a nice pattern, Rich. I'll be shopping for one when you get them in only white and yellow tones, without the oranges (the only butters I like, and wow are they pretty!)

Should only take another 20-30 years before anybody solves that puzzle. :D
