Hey ya'll,

I aquired a baby black rat snake over the weekend. IDK if its male or female yet, but once it grows up, i'd like to breed it to my corns. This will be my first foray into the world of hybrid/intergrades, and I have some questions:

A) Im sure this crossing has happened before, so what's it called?

B) If I bred it to a ghost corn, would the hypo and anery genes carry over? i.e. would it effect the black rat genes, making the offspring corn/BR het. hypo and anery? (this seems like a dumb question to me)

C) Considering that a black rat has no other colors, does that invalidate question B?

D) Does anybody have any pics of the "normal" corn/BR cross?

Not sure what they call this cross, but I'm pretty certain it has been done many times.

Yes, the genes would be carried over to the offspring, and would show up when you bred the offspring back to each other or back to the ghost.

No, some patterning would carry over, though some babies would have less than others. I could be wrong on this one, but after seeing other hybrid crosses with other ratsnakes, I'm pretty confident that I'm correct.

D) Does anybody have any pics of the "normal" corn/BR cross?

I believe one of the adults we picked up last year is a corn x black rat hybrid, but we don't really know for sure as it was purchased from a pet store and they didn't have details on the snake's background.

Black ratsnakes come in several morphs; albino, white-sided and leucistic come to mind first. Any genes the parents have would be inherited by the babies, e.g. bloodred, pewter, white-sided, leucistic, etc.. When a pair of the F1 generation are bred together, you would get a myriad of different combinations in the babies. I don't believe they have a specific name, although beastia intergrade I think has been suggested.

In 22 yrs of breeding corns I thought I'd try a cross, but My albino Emory's didn't want anything to do with my surplus amel corns... Ah ,oh well. Good luck with your future project!
