It's Jager time!
This happened a while ago, but I shall tell the awful story from the start.

As some may know, trying to put boas back into tubs can be tricky. I have always found in every single boa I have ever owned that they want to go UP instead of IN the box. So when Beaux decided to dart up and out he got himself caught in a 2.5cm hole in the tid of the tub where the handle clips in.

Hes a big boy, and only managed down to his neck. I tried to pull him back as soon as I realised what was happening but he pushed himself further in. Now we are in trouble... hes completely stuck. I am trying to push and pull him out without ripping his neck off (yes he was that stuck).

5 minutes later i'm in floods of tears trying to figure out what the hell to do, he turns on me understadably and tries to bite. But hes short on breath when hes hissing. So now I realise hes squishing his lungs! Theres so much pressure building up, and hes stressed out and agrressive and I'm in a complete state.

I manage to cover his head with a towel whilst im still trying to pull him out. Another 5 minutes go by, I run to the kitchen and grab a knife thinking I can cut through the plastic and make the hole bigger but then I realised how stupid that idea was. So I just sit the box lid on the flood (snake attached) and cry... If I pull him too hard I'm going to break his ribs. He continues to thrash and panic whilst trying to bite me in every possible way. I decide that if I don't just get him out now hes possibly going to suffocate. So I pull as hard as possible whilst pushing on his nose in an attempt to make him go backwards and SUCCESS! One free snake lying limp on the floor. At first I think hes dead from shock or stress, then he takes in a HUGE breath and starts to slither away. I gently pick him up and ceck his scales. They look ruffled but not too bad. I feel for broken ribs but theres no lumps and he seems to be OK.

Fast forward a few weeks later (tonight) and the scales on his neck are badly damaged. They have turned a blueish black colour. I have seen scale damage before and it usually goes away after a shed or two so I'm sure hes going to be fine.

Anyway, heres some shots. If anyone has had experience with badly damaged scales could you please share anything you have to say about the healing process. I just feel like the worst boa mum in the world. Although he is acting perfectly normal, he had a lovely big adult mouse tonight and is active and alert as usual. I don't think hes going to die anymore lol and I'm not too worried about his scales because they are easily fixed.

Poor Beaux :(
Accidents happen Elle, you're not a bad snake mum.

Yeah I suppose it wasn't really my fault, but at the time I blamed myself for picking boxes with holes in the lid for the handle to clip into. Needless to say he no longer lives in that box.

Oh i was feeling it for you as i was reading that. I could just emagine the absolute panic you must have been feeling at that time. Its a completely natural thing to blame yourself in that kind of situation but i think we all know that your a pro when it come to snakes (boa's especally).I allways look forward to your threads cos there always so kool. Im just glad the snake is ok! Looks like he will be fine in a few sheads like you said.
I REEAALLLLYYY want a boa Elle! Do you have any Albino boa's? Those things are SWWEEEEEEET!

Oh I'm deffinatley not a pro at anything lol. But thank you for your kind words.

I know hes going to be fine, but I don't think I stopped to breath through that whole episode. It was simply horrific to see him stuck and not be able to help him without hurting him.

oh i could imagine! well at least he seems to be ok now! :licklips: Hope he carrys on doing well.

Me too, thanks Brett :)

I will keep this thread updated with his progress and see what the next shed brings.

Sounds like you did JUST the right thing Elle, in a situation that doesn't have any very good options! Congratulations for the cool thinking and the nerve to do what had to be done!!
He looks great by the way..

Wow, what a scary story but I am glad everything turned out okay! I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation but you did the right thing!

Thanks guys. I don't really think there was a right thing to do in that situation, but I don't think I did anything wrong.

I usually just literally throw the boas back in their tubs so I don't have to deal with them pissing around trying to go up while I want them to go down. But I decided to just lift the lid slightly and see if he would crawl in the gap once his head was in... but nawwwwwwww.

Awww. That's very scary. Can't imagine how panicked you must've felt. I know I would. I'm glad he got some dinged scales and not much worse!

He's still very beautiful. If only I could afford one of those pretties. I think I'll have my hands full when my mutt comes along in August or September though.

I know how you feel! I had an experience with a snake vs. duct tape back in the day (freak accident) and it is the worst feeling ever! Beaux's ok and it's not your fault, don't get stuck in snake mum guilt :) *hugs

Seems like you did the right thing, placing fault on yourself would benefit no one.
Next time I suggest maybe using olive oil as a lubricant- maybe that would have made it easier for him to pull out?
Maybe I understood the situation wrong.

At any rate, generally speaking- black tissue means Narcosis- I cannot say for sure what's the extent of the Narcosis, if any, but I think that allowing a vet to look and examine it would be a prudent idea.

My Durango kingsnake once decided to go up -into- the pc.... I allowed him to travel on the table, not knowing that under the pc's case there's a hole. When I figured what was going on I ran out and switched off the main power circuit... afterwhich I opened the case and struggled with the damnable serpent as it decided that it was -inlove- with the computer's power unit... took about 25 minutes to get him out :/

I am glad to see that the Boa is alive and well though, a real beauty.

I'll take a shot of the horrible square hole he got through. It has awful sharp edges which were not allowing him to move backwards as all his scales would be turned up the wrong way (which was probably why he was not willing to move backwards himself).

I am positive hes going into shed, so I shall see how his scales look afterwards. If he loses them, he loses them. But I am sure he should be ok :)

I am thinking perhaps of taking him for an xray just to be sure there are no damaged or broken ribs.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone, it was a horrific experience.
