....stores.

There is a reptile store in my town that sells only captive born animals. You would think this is a good thing. But it's not.
You walk in the door and the stench of ammonia burns out your nose hairs. Its from the feeder rabbits rats and mice that are covered in thier own filth. The store actually has to leave the front doors open to air the place out. I honestly don't know how the employees work in there without having a huge headache at the end of the day.

As far as the employees go, they're nice enough. Very friendly and informative. Yet, many of their animals have mites and don't look so hot. :shrugs:

And then there is the fact that they allow a 3 or 4 foot alligator walk around the store unattended. I was crouched down looking at a tank on the floor and the thing came walking up to me. Not a nice surprise.

Another time I was in the store, the employees were feeding live rats to the alligator because some customers wanted to see what would happen. It was bloody, and at least one wounded rat escaped.

I have more than a couple of friends who have been in that store and told me that they don't see how anyone can keep reptiles because they smell so bad.

The whole thing just irks me. There is a similar store in my parent's town. Where are all the good reptile stores?

/rant.

I'm having a bad week so you get to listen to my rants. Sorry.

Wow i dont even know what to say.. that sounds so dirty and UNSAFE.. that aligator could kill someone... mabey notify the local police? :shrugs:

notify local autorities, if you can smell the ammonia enough that you have to keep the doors open to keep from sufficating </exaggeration> than maybe something is wrong. The alligator is definitely a hazard to customers and, IMHO, a horrible example of how to manage and handle herps of any type. If the store owners are willing to let something like that simply roam around, would they do the same for a venomous snake, both are quite deadly, hell the gateor will definitely make you loose an extremity where the snake will just sit you in the hospital for a couple days... heh, I still say contact the proper authorities, they are turning people off of herps and such, I doubt there's anything godo in it. Hell, they dont even have the audacity to take care of a simple mite problem..

Slippery Ernie, if you don't mind my asking, where are you located? This shop sounds familiar. Of course, I suppose there are quite a few shops like that one.

ASPCA and your local police, I'd imagine.

An alligator wandering around the store with a wide open front door is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Not to mention the stench and ill-care for the animals inside.

I'd take photographs or a video before you call though, just to document. Some agencies will call and notify the store there's been a complaint, so of course by the time they DO come, everything's clean, everyone's fed and it looks great.

The whole thing sounds deplorable. =(
