I need some advice & help! Hognose related

Catch any frog, and simply rub the thawed, dry pink on it and get some slime transferred. If he wants frogs, that should do the trick. The fact he bit chicken is encouraging.

Haha! Sounds like fun. I live in an apartment complex with a pond that's full of fish, turtles, ducks, birds, etc, and there's about a billion lizards, geckos, and of course frogs hopping around at night. I'll get my flashlight and look for one. :)

a frog somewhere tomorrow morning thinking WTF just happened there???? :roflmao:

good luck

they are naturally amphibian eaters so that's got a good chance of working.

bahahahaa! ^^^

yeah really eh?
poor frog, but he's doing his duty and helping us out without even knowing! ;)

If frogs had friends & could talk...
Frog 1
Man I swear I was just sitting there minding my business when one of those 2 legged things grabbed me! Then it rubbed this little dead thing on me and let me go...
Frog 2
No way?? That is weird, very weird!! I think living inside those boxes may be messing with their minds or something??

Nah, Frog #2 is going "Sheesh, with the alien abduction stories again? Have you been eating the 'magic' flies again?"

Lol!

So, I hadn't been able to find a frog.. It hasn't rained here in over a week, which might be why. That, or they heard you guys and hid really good from me.

So in the mean time, I went back to fish scenting pinkies. I used some tuna, reeeeally let the two .. intermingle their scents.. haha.. it smelled really awful. And I left it in his box overnight, with no luck.

I'm thinking I maybe should start using the deli cup, and put it in a brown paper bag instead of putting it in his small tupperware house. He gets really interested when I put it in, noses it, and then gets .. distracted? And then hides from it. Lol.

So on Wednesday, I'm going to try one of these things:

1. Paper bag + Deli cup overnight, scented pinkie w/ salmon/tuna

2. Paper bag + Deli cup overnight, scented pinkie HEAD? w/ salmon/tuna

OR

3. If it rains/frogs become available, frog scented pinkie, paper bag + delicup over night.

I'm starting to think size is an issue, so maybe I can just offer a head, or a cut pinkie? Any thoughts?

Also, my scale has been broken recently, but one's due to deliver here either Tuesday or Wednesday from Amazon. So I can get a weight on him. I think he's absolutely tiny though.... maybe 5-6g? But he's still flicking his tongue, curious, alert.

think anything is worth a try ... just to give you a frame of reference my two were 7g and 8g respectively when I got them - and neither had a problem with a pinkie. They have quite big mouths for their size. Which isn't to say its not worth trying a head.

I suppose you don't actually know if he has EVER eaten ...?

I actually don't know at all. She just told me he never ate with her, and that she couldn't remember the breeder she got him from, only that it was Tampa Repticon.. I did look in to Tampa Repticon, and the only hognose breeder (based on the names) was Envy Hognoses. I'll ask her if he ever pooped while she had him, which might be the only indication.

Oh, and I don't think the pinkie's too big, I think he might just be getting intimidated/could use some more bloody scent to get him fired up to eat.

Also, I want to throw this out there....

If I can't get him to eat in a decent amount of time, I would be so happy if someone nearby (maybe within 3-4 hours) of Sarasota, FL would be interested in giving it a shot - maybe someone with more experience. I've only had a corn snake since July, but I do a lot of reading and have stuck to all the advice I've been given, but I want the little dude to live more than I want to keep him, y'know? So if anyone is nearby and might be interested, that's a possibility. I can drive him starting Dec. 10th or so if needed.
He hasn't eaten since atleast October 4th, so it's been a full month & a week. :) Thanks.

honestly it sounds like you are doing everything right!!!! and god willing he will eat soon.

if its any consolation my spawn of satan boy hog who is now about 18 months old and I have had since was 8g STILL refused to eat today, his sand-eel and fish scented fluff all lovingly prepared and hidden in his special toilet roll tunnel!!!!

the same preparation fine last month?? wouldn't go near any of it!!!!!

Envy Hognose is the same as Sand Boa Morphs. They're nice folks. I know they did have some snakes last time they were in Memphis that were explicitly listed as feeding live.

It's also possible that there were breeders that aren't hognose specific, but had some there. Glades Herp always has quite a mix, and there are a few other exhibitors who have a mix of snake types, even if their company name indicates that they mostly have balls or corns.

Do you know anyone who has pet frogs? If you lived close to me, you could use one of mine to scent pinkies (Hmmm...maybe we need a hognose?)

Just a tip, do NOT use fire belly toads to scent with! I poisoned a baby hoggie trying that once.

I'd imagine you might want to be careful of pickerel frogs, too-I know they can poison other frogs simply by being in the same tank.

Haha thank you Iulia. :) I really hope so... I think, if I ever get a hog in the future, I'll probably go for a female.. Seems they are much more willing feeders? But now I know I'm probably more of a corn snake girl, as cute as hog's are. I'm worried sick about him!

For sure. I might ask the girl who originally had the hog if Envy sounds familiar, and if not, I might try e-mailing Envy and ask if they have any record of selling a little hog like him. It's worth a shot. If I can figure out what he WAS eating, or if he was, then I can probably feed him that, and.. yeah. :)

I don't, but I might check some community groups/craigslist for frogs. I doubt anyone will respond.. but.. yeah. lol

Thank you! I figured they might be a bad idea, but it's good to know for sure. Those are the only frogs I know for sure are available in stores around here.

I dont think there's any pickerels near me, but I did look up local frogs, and found that what I usually see outside must be a cuban tree frog, which apparently have some poisonous secretions...? Shoot, that plan might just be ruined. :(

Try to send some photos of the little guy to Envy. If he is one of theirs I would bet money they would recognize him. Hope you can figure something out for him =/
