I'm Going to Have to Kill Him

Susan

Go Ahead, Make My Day!
This morning started out as another nice day. I had a PM from Jeff Linkchorst about my Sunkissed male's coloration and I was going to post the photos I took just this past week-end. I click on Browse to find the first photo......the entire disc/drive/memory/whatever is GONE. Hubby had installed additional memory when we bought this computer and he recently had me transfer all my photos to that (drive G). I ran search in my computer for any of my photos...nothing. I'm able to find the file names of the recent photos I've been working with, try to bring them up and am told that the "path to G: does not exist". I have no idea what hubby did yesterday (I couldn't even get on the computer last night after I came home from work because he was on it), but he had better fix it today or I will literally KILL HIM!!! And it won't be pretty.

Oh no Susan, not all your wonderful photographs!

I really would not know what to do if that happened to me... I suppose it's a good thing I upload things to the likes of photobucket and deviant art. That way at least the best of my work is still kicking about.

They've got to be there somewhere. And if worst came to worst, at least you've posted the best of the best on cs.com so you can always get them back.

I back mine up on a little hard drive, totally separate from the computer. I had a computer scare a few weeks ago, but didn't lose anything, which prompted me to back everything up again. At one time, my laptop hard drive died- unrecoverable. I had some stuff on a desktop (which now won't even boot up) but I lost a ton of programs.

Good luck.

As a past computer consultant, I have always advised on storing important data on additional storage devices such as cd-r's/dvd-r's or external hard drives and to set their computer up as a RAID system. Unfortunately, by time these solutions are mentioned, it's usually after a loss of data. But it's still important stuff to factor in for future use.

But from what it sounds like, it's highly possible that your data is still there, it just might have been bumped to another drive letter or something. I don't understand what you mean by "Hubby had installed additional memory", memory is often referred to RAM which shouldn't have any effect on your drive letters being changed or any data loss. But if your reference to "memory" is in regards to a hard drive, then that might be a whole 'nother situation. Without further information, it's difficult to understand exactly what was done to cause your problem, but I'm sure with a little understanding it can be rectified.

Good luck!

In a previous life before Winders, I once typed "delete:c *.*" when I meant "a". My ex-wife (I'm sure it contributted) had just finished, but not backed up her Law Review paper paper. Man, that couch was uncomfortable.

If we lived closer to each other (you know, within the same time zone, at least!), I'd send the boyfriend over to your place to take care of it...he's good like that. :)

It's got to be all in there, yet...

A few years ago, I took it upon myself to delete infected/fake registry keys & it was going well until I decided to delete the whole key, instead of just the one piece of that key that was the fake one...whoops. My computer wouldn't go past the blue screen when starting up -- I couldn't even get to the "Welcome" part! A friend's boyfriend (I wasn't yet with my current amor at the time...!) made my hard drive a slave to his computer, and copied & reformatted everything, and then put all my stuff back. I barely lost anything. :) So, it should all be there...just buried under some stuff, at the moment. :)

I switched computers recently, most of my pics are still on my old imac. Mine weren't great pics like yours though. I have snagged back a lot of the pictures I posted on CS - when I run across one I copy it onto my new comp. I hope you don't end up having to do it that way but the pictures are here at least, if you can't recover them any other way.

I was thinking the same, IF by memory she meant storage. BIOS usually automatically detects new hard drives when they're installed. Sometimes you have to go into your settings (BIOS & Administrator Tools) and sort it out manually. It sounds like when the new HD was installed, it stole the old HD's letter assignment (I'm not sure about that though as Windows usually doesn't give you used letters as choices when you do that). Data isn't lost when this happens, your PC just doesn't know the old drive is still there, you just have to show it that it is.

Now if all of that is wrong and you really did mean RAM, I fear for your not so better half ;)

Because of our pics and other important documents on our computer, my husband bought two external hard drives to double store our data. If our main computer goes tits up, all the info is still on both of those externals. Definitely something to get to save yourself and your husband this kind of heartache.

PS...prison food isn't that bad....

Thanks everyone for your concern, kind words and humor! Hubby knew exactly what had happened, and as I am much more computer illiterate than he is, I had no idea what he had done originally to know how to fix it. It seems he added an external hard drive which somehow got turned off. Since I knew he had added "something" that would increase the amount of space/memory available to store info, I had assumed it was in the main hard drive and thought that other little box had something to do with his stuff to make DVDs. At least I know how to use Windows, my software programs and other general computer and internet functions. I have one coworker that doesn't even know a basic keyboard. She's never even used a typewriter and doesn't know how to use the Shift button to make a capital letter. Hard to believe in this day and age, but true.

Oh man he is deep trouble!!!! I am sorry to hear this Susan. I hope you are able to find your pics. I lost 2.5 years worth of work, family vacations, and my snakes. it is never fun thing to go through. I still haven't replaced that slave drive. and probably wont. Just store on discs i guess :shrugs: He better get busy. His time is a wastin. I'm pretty sure Susan already has her plans for his demise in order.

Ya, my hubby (The IT tech by profession.... who should know to back up, back up, and back up again) did the same thing right after I finished taking over a hundred pics for the ACR. :angry01: We both lived through it..... somehow.
