hey guys, im very new to corn snakes and i have spent a lot of time getting advice on corns before i bought tulip, and i have completely fallen in love with her, she is amazing, when she sheds there is no problem, no biting nothing. she even sleeps in my shirt pocket etc

but, the other day she wouldnt keep still in my hands, i put her back in her enclouser and she turned around and struck at me, rattled her tail and kept striking at the sides and the leaves and anything that moved in there.....she really scared me, is this behavior weird, im too afriad to put my hand in and touch her now... :S

is it because of shedding or the fact that (i am a guitarist) so i put her enclosure in my friends room when i play my guitar loud, is she stressed wth all the moving round or maybe is it because he has a scorpion in his room aswell, i need help if thats cool because i really am worried :( thanks for your time guys
 
thanks man, i just am a bit worried now, shall i not handle her for a few days? she is due for a feed tonight aswell
 
Yes as said she could be going into shed. I would just leave her alone for a little while but then hold her some more. It could be her just saying put me down im tired. She should come around for you.
 
cool ill leave her be for a bit, should i still feed her tonight tho?

OK well then maybe she was just hungry. I would leave her alone for they afternoon and then tonight try to feed her. If she doesn't eat then that could be a sign she is going to shed soon.

Thats what that guy did in the movie snow dogs bit the dog to show him who's boss maybe it works for snakes? :shrugs: :grin01:
 
haha thats amazing, imagine what would be going through her head, ill try not to tho :p she is sneaky as hell and she would probably bite my tounge off haha.

Be careful about letting her sleep in your pocket- I've read two threads here in the last week that involved corns hiding in clothing and getting lost (and not found yet) from there. Especially with the tiny ones, I really think it's best to always have a hand on them.

It's not unusual for babies to be nervous. Tail rattling can be a sign of fear, or of her warning you to stay away. My young ones occasionally tail rattle when I am putting them back after they have been fed. It's also startling when even a tiny baby strikes at you. That's what the snake is hoping, that it has frightened you and you are going to leave it alone.

Don't worry about Tulip actually biting you. It happens _so_ fast- be careful not to jerk your hand away if she does- you could damage her mouth/teeth! If she gets you, she may not even break the skin, and if she does- it will just be like a pin prick. Still- it's very startling at the time. (OTOH, my smallest baby bit me on the back of the hand, didn't break the skin- I just felt a little scratch and looked and there she was biting. They almost always release just about instantly.)

If she ever does it again, while you have her out, don't reward her by putting her back in her viv. Keep her out till she relaxes a bit. It kind of sounds like you just startled her somehow while replacing her- since she doesn't have a history of striking. But just remember- all that striking and tail rattling and musking means she is afraid- and the way to overcome that is by more gentle handling.

I'd go ahead and feed her as usual unless she actually is getting ready to shed and has gone into hiding. Good luck!

Could be a little shed-time aggression. I'm not saying it's a contributing factor, but I'd advice you to stop shuffling her from room to room. That would probably stress her out more than the vibration from your guitar amp. Maybe you should use headphones.
 
This is a serious question I can't seem to find an answer on- will the guitar amp bother the snakes, if they are about four feet away?

My guess is: yes. I don't know how much it's going to bother them, and I don't know if they become acclimated to it eventually. There are lots of variables too: volume, bass level, etc.. I've never been a fan of "loud", so I don't really have much firsthand experience with this. :shrugs:
 
hey im back now and about to feed her.....ill update in a mo, well my guitar amp is facing away from the enclsoure and about 5/6 feet away, when i play i keep it very quiet but its when i feel like havig a loud half hour thats when i move her, i may just use headphones rather than messing her about by moving her

yeah it did startle me :( im still very cautious around snakes so it came as a shock, ah well see how the feeding goes
 
there.....took her pinky no problem, she struck at it and is eating it now :)
do you think she was just a bit off last night or maybe i annoyed her by maybe handling her too hard :S

do you think she will keep doing it, i hope not :(
 
Glad she ate. I think she will settle down for you, just keep handling her and she should get used to it.
 
The less you handle her, the longer it will take her to be unafraid. I think she was just off last night. I have Choco out for two to three hours at a time, and he doesn't get tired of that (that I can tell!) Just be extra gentle with her. Don't forget to not handle her now for 48 hours.

You may never know why she got scared and started the defensive behavior. It may happen again someday. My female emoryi struck at me through her feeding tub today when I went to grab it from the rack. I've had her over a year, and she's the sweetest snake you could hope for. But I startled her. When I took her out, she knew it was me, and she was her usual mellow self.
