Introducing Ty Lee - The Mexican Barking Rat ...

Tavia

Elemental Exotics
... Or that's what my husband calls Chihuahuas. Was trying to get Bella in the pictures for size reference but she was being kind of a jealous dork during the photo shoot. She's still pouting a bit but I think she will adjust okay in the next few weeks.

Ty Lee is the black and white puppy, will be 8 weeks on Sun. Bella is the tan one and is ten years old. They are both purebred Chihuahuas.

Thanks! We've all survived the night, only a little sleep deprived and a lot of that the fault of Katara getting her revenge this morning for us bringing home this little rodent without her consent, although she was less upset about the new puppy than she initially was with the new kittens, so there's something at least.
But I am so out of practice house training puppies!

Ty Lee, that's cute! ... I think I know what you are a fan of!

You are likely right! We have a Katara, my husband's cat, and Iroh the GTP and now a Ty Lee. I'd never actually seen the show until this year but it's one of my husband's favorites. I'd thought of several other names but none of them really moved my husband when we were talking about it on the way to look at her and he said he thought it would neat to name her in the same theme as Katara, our black and white cat. Once we met her, Ty Lee seemed to be the best fit of all the ones we had discussed in that theme.

Was playing around taking a few pictures a bit ago, of course mine aren't as good as the ones my husband took.

Don't like that itchy collar!

Have been keeping her mostly confined to the kitchen as it has carpet that I'm not found of, so we don't care so much about accidents on it. Have the door blocked by her crate and a pillow when she is loose in there. Gregor has tried to play with her several times but wants to be a bit too rough, so we've been keeping a close eye on that.

And this is what Katara tends to do when there is something new in the house that she doesn't really approve of, lurk on the stairs and watch all with the stare of doom.

She has been conked out in Bella's bed for a long time and I got a bit camera happy.

She started out in the middle and wiggled her way half off the edge in her sleep.

And then back to sleep after a potty break but this time on her own blanket. Bella reclaimed her own bed and for nearly the first time, chose to sit near the puppy.

She looks really spunky, like Ty Lee! I think it's perfect. I remember Iroh now! I don't have any Avatar-themed names, but I like the show. I watched it with my kids a few years ago, and we'll probably watch it again this winter.

I didn't have too much trouble house training Isabella in the beginning, she caught on to the idea quickly. She does still have several incidents, most usually around the beginning of winter, like she will ask to go out and pee but doesn't want to be out in the cold long enough to poop, so she sneaks off somewhere in the house and does it.

I'd actually decided to try litter box training Ty Lee, with the hope that Bella could learn it too, at least enough to stop going on the floor when it's cold out, but that only lasted a little while. All the dogs I've house broken before, I'd just train to go straight out. Ty Lee started off doing fairly well with the litter box, it actually just had a puppy pad, not litter, but then she decided that was the only place she absolutely will not go.
Usually I have good success if I catch them starting to have an accident somewhere inappropriate, say a sharp "No!" scoop them up and put them down in an approved place and tons of praise when they finish in the right spot, they usually catch on pretty quickly but Ty Lee has the most annoying ability to hold it for insane amounts of time after being interrupted! The whole box thing was quite mutually frustrating us both and I finally gave up after about a day and went back to what I know. She made huge progress in just one day and didn't have any accidents at all yesterday with being taken outside.

Well, Ty Lee got her first vet visit and puppy shots today. She did well and so far not much of a reaction to the shots, although she has been sleeping a bit more than usual today.

She is a hair over 2 pounds. Vet said she could run a fever and have some swelling at the injection site but so far she's just sleepier than usual. Luckily we've only had one dog have a bad reaction to shots so far, a Pom, years ago that her whole face swelled up and she ran a high fever.

Ty Lee's new play pen got here today and so far I'm pretty happy with it, wish it was just a bit bigger though. Going to visit my mother in law tomorrow for a few days and decided I needed something bigger than her sleeping crate to keep her in a fair amount of the time we are there, as there aren't any easy spaces at the MIL's place to block her in and keep her in sight. If she was loose, probably be having a ton of accidents, as we are just barely started on the house training.
I have a large crate that is about the same size as this pen but it would take up so much room in the car! This folds up really small and weighs almost nothing. Had it setup all day with the door open, letting her get used to it, this was her first nap in there.

There was a bigger one I wanted more but didn't think of this option until Christmas day and as it was had to do one day shipping to get it here on time for our trip and that wasn't a shipping option on the one I liked more. Hopefully this works well!
