Is my Granite Boy Pied-Sided?

My little granite boy has always had very pale sides, and when he was little I didn't think he was anything but a normal granite. However, as he's grown, and especially when he's in shed, I'm seeing what looks like white areas on his sides. I saw pictures of his parents, and it looks like one of them has a distinct patch of white. So what I'm wondering is, is he actually pied-sided, or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

I see what you mean... I don't know but I can definitely see something there.

The short answer is "no". He is very nicely diffused but not Pied Sided. I produce those types of Granites every season and they are great looking adults but not P/S.

Targan has gotten a lot bigger and the odd areas are a lot clearer now. These pictures are unaltered in any way.

Is this a normal granite thing? I see some with white splotches, but not usually this much.

It's what I've heard refered to as a "non white pied" I believe. Where that differs just from a diffused I'm not 100% sure but I think it deals with how far up the diffusion goes on the sides.

Here's an update on Targan. I bought him from Walter Smith in 2012, and this year Walter produced some extreme pied-sided granites with the same hets as my boy. I asked Walter about his parentage, and Walter did confirm that Targan is full brother to the extreme pied granite. Turns out my suspicions were correct! I will test-breed him with my hypo pied bloodred girl in a couple of years just to be sure and to see if the different lines of pied-side are compatible.

IMO I see pied as well. Sometimes with those granite babies it is harder to see. Your snake is not the first to be sold as white sided or extreme diffusion to later find out it was in fact pied. Good breeders like Walter will error on the side of caution and sell as not pied than to sell a snake as pied and later find out it isn't.

Photos 1, 4, 6, and 9...seem to substantiate your pied suspicions. IMHO.

...and Walter did confirm that Targan is full brother to the extreme pied granite...

That it comes from Walter's pied family tree...tips the scales in your favor.

Targan's color continues to develop. His previously black saddles are now brown, and literally the only scales on him which are not speckled are his pied spots. Even his belly has speckles, even though I wasn't able to take a picture of it. (He doesn't like being restrained much, makes him wiggly.) I can see why this morph is called "granite" given all of his black speckling.
