Is this corn snake a female?

Hi, I'm new here!

I just wanted to know if anyone could answer my question.. is this young corn snake a female?

I asked the guy (who I'm going to be buying the snake off) if he could try and see a female.. I asked him if he could try and tell by their tails? As I've seen people say that this is a good way without stressing/probing/popping the snake?

Well.. he said he thinks this one is a female?

I have not got anymore pictures but could you try and guess or tell me if this a female..

Much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

If he (or you) can take a clear picture of the underside of the tail, we could guess at the gender. It's harder to make an accurate guess when they're younger, and even with an older snake, it would still just be an educated guess. If you're hoping to breed this snake, you'll want to have him or her probed by someone experienced, or if s/he is small enough, you could have him/her popped. Neither of those methods are terribly stressful for the snake if the person doing it is experienced.

Very pretty snake, by the way!

Okay, I will get him to send me a picture of its underside.

I don't know anybody who would be able to pop/probe it as the breeder can't and I've only just started keeping corn so I'm quite new.

Thank you, does amel motley sound right for its morph?

There is no 100% way to sex a snake other then breeding. You can take a pretty good guess at it with either popping or probing but only a professional should do that as it's easy to damage your snake. Another way you can try and tell is if you have a full shed (tail in tact) you can count the belly scales from the vent to the tip, if there are 130 or less it's a female, 140 or more is male and the grey zone between 130-140 could be either. Again this is not a for sure way but it's fun to do and has worked with both my girls who have laid eggs so I know are female

If you are looking for someone to pop/probe, a vet specializing in reptiles and snakes will sometimes be able to do it. Again, its hard to tell by the tapering of the tail when they are so young, and even when they are older its never more than a good estimate.

Why do you want to know the gender? Are you planning on breeding?

That's an amel stripe. The banding across the stripes makes it appear motley-ish, but the dorsal gap is broad and the stripes thin. That along with a disconnected head pattern, I'd be pretty surprised if it weren't homozygous stripe.

If the breeder called it a motley, I'd also be prepared for him to disagree with me. There's a lot of folks who don't see the difference apparently.
