Isabel Goes Walkabout

Nanci

Alien Lover
Isabel is bored. I walked out to the kitchen and found her in a new perch that she hadn't accessed before!

She found her blankies, maybe that means she needs a nap after her bath, walking out to the mail box, watching me pick tomatoes, and rampaging around my bedroom while I changed sheets.

I love how she looks so pleased with herself, and so defiant: "You can't make me stay in my boring old viv!"

Thanks for looking!

That's one prehistoric looking lizard! She is waaaay cool. She sure wouldn't be walking about at my place. I keep it at about 65*. The poor girl would freeze. ;)

It's a balmy 84F here, with the AC running...Not quite my preferred temp, but a compromise between what the AC can actually do, with probably poor insulation, a full sun southern exposure, and what I would actually like, which is about 78-80F.

I've never actually let her run free in the house, but right now I am trying it, in my bedroom, with the door closed and the closet closed. I guess she could go under the bed, but the robot vacuum keeps it clean under there, and she would be in sight...

Excellent job, Isabel! I can't imagine how she got out, but she certainly has got a knack for finagling her way out! :)

Well, her branch can get her up on her lights, and after replacing her, she did try to make a crossing from the lights over the heat lamp to the bookcase, but I freaked out about her getting burned (luckily all these attempts are quite noisey) so that's when she got to come run around in the bedroom. I think she may have just really stretched up from her brick and got ahold of the edge and hoisted herself out. She does have a screen for when I am not home...

So I'm guessing Isabelle is reaching a point where she requires less insects in her diet? If you had to estimate, about how many crickets (or other insects) do you think she eats in a week?

I introduced my dragons to the wide world of veggies and fruits very early in their lives. At first, they turned their snouts up at anything that wasn't moving..But as they get older, they have really started enjoying their fruits and veggies. Scorch, my male, will even sometimes bypass the crickets and head straight for the veggie plate first. They both LOVE mustard greens and squash. Anytime that combination is on the menu, it's gobbled down in a matter of minutes.

I just can't wait til they get as big as Isabelle and can go hang out with me while I'm working on the garden. :)

Actually, Isabel eats mostly insects. My reason for buying an adult was to skip that whole insect-intense baby phase, and I bought a dragon who hates fruits and vegetables. I counter this by feeding greens in the morning in hopes she'll get so hungry during the day to eat them. Not very successful. I also have put silkworms in sticky ground up fruits and veg, but she is good at sorting. Also, she is such a piglet that I can feed her one or two bites of anything- she doesn't even check, just eats, but then if it's not silkworms, she stops. So she eats a lot of silkworms and a few superworms. I haven't tried starving her into submission...yet. I'm too weak.

Perhaps she's picky about the veggies she eats too. Have you tried lots of different types of greens? Or have you tried scenting the greens with silkworms (Eew, I know)? I think mine got interested in veggies because I put a few freshly shed meal worms in their veggie bowl. At first, they were attracted to the bow because they could see the worms moving. Then, in their frenzy, they would accidentally get some greens along with the worms.

Mine definitely show a preference for mustard greens over collard greens - butternut squash over zucchini - papaya over apples - etc. It's funny how they develop a taste for something, and then it's hard to switch them to something else.

Go Isabel... lol

I got a question. Can you potty train dragons? Or when she's out of her viv she just does her duties anywhere she wants?

Well, she doesn't go every day. And you can sort of get them in a routine of going when you put them in the bathtub to soak. This is better than cleaning it out of the viv! She's never gone outside of her viv or the bathtub.

I've tried: mustard, collard, kale, turnip greens. Sometimes she will take a bite if they are ground up in a food processor. Spring Mix, cillantro, yellow squash, acorn squash, mango, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, banana, various baby foods, hibiscus. The previous owner said she would eat Spring Mix, but barely. She gets the proper vitamins. She gets a bowl of some sort of greens every morning, whether she wants them or not. In the afternoon, I trick her into eating one or two bites of fruit.

She loves hornworms!! Went through a phase of loving Phoenix worms, but quit. Will eat a waxworm, but they aren't her favorite. Won't touch crickets (who cares!) loved supers, then hated supers, now likes supers again. Silkworms are just the easiest.
