Headed for rehab.
As some of you know I have been fighting with my city council for over 18 months now over a new animal ordnance that has some pretty stupid laws about exotics and I have lost my steam. They have made it clear the city needs this ordnance even it has some stupid language (venomous insects?) in it and refused to table it at the last meeting for revisions to make it fair (or even comprehensible). So I am therefore giving up and taking a break from the hobby and selling my animals.

This ordinance makes it difficult even to keep corns? Or are you talking about taking a break from keeping arachnids or something?

Yep consrictor snakes require a $100 per year per animal permit.

Cripes! Even for a colubrid constrictor? If you feed f/t they hardly constrict anyway. Does it matter?

That really sucks. What's the intended purpose of the ordinance? I heard about a similar thing being considered in Florida to counter introduced species, but Kentucky?

Greed and bureaucratic stupidity. What other reason could there be to put an ordinance on corns or rabbits or some kid's guinea pigs at a $100 a pop?

Oh, that's right...it's for the good of the public so they know where all the exotics are. My bad.

They want to know where all the exotics are yet they have left the entire class of Arachnida out of the ordnance so spiders and scorpions are exempt.

I just heard about this recently and still can't believe what total bull it is. It's really too bad that it's basically forcing your hand like this. :(

Would it help if I came and talked to them? :shrugs:

:grin01:

Man, that sucks. Do you know if this had anything to do with the Humane Society of America or PETA? Sounds like the stuff that they pull.

If this were me I would move just outside the city limits, and start a snake farm! :grin01: Good luck!

Here, here. I'd be looking for a new address, too, but I know it's not that simple. You need to become ordained as a minister of your own obscure religion that worships or maintains snakes as idols then tell them they're interfering with your religious rights. That would make them blink.

Scott...

I am sorry to hear that you are going to have to sell off your animals! It really sucks that the government can take away our hobbies! Please let me know if there is anything I can do!

I would but I just bought a house and moving is not an option.

At one point we were thinking of moving to Kentucky but I went online to look up regs for reptiles in all the states we were considering. Kentucky was removed from our list because we wouldn't be able to have my Green tree pythons. They have a huge list of laws of what you can and can't have. All the other states I researched are remarkably relaxed in theirs. I really feel for you. I don't think I could give up my babies.

Kentucky made the list? :grin01: All jokes aside, I really like Kentucky. :) In fact, I'll be there in about 5 weeks for some R&R.

Sometimes I really don't understand where some of the regulations come from that different states have over some species. Some of them I understand with invasive species and what-not, but it seems to get excessive/crazy sometimes.

is there anyway you can find a list of states that allow and don't allow certain types of snakes? i live in maryland and im pretty sure we can own anything besides poisonous. i'd be curious to know about d.c. and philly though because i can see myself living there in the future.
