I had to bring Krusty in for the night. It's going to get cold, and when I planted him last night, a foot and a half into his hibernaculum, he didn't stay put! I'm a little worried with his history of pneumonia a year ago, so I thought I'd bring him in.

Well, I'm cold too. All I wanted was a hot bath. This meant I had to remove Krusty from his indoor pen (the bathtub). So I put his house facing the laundry basket, trapping him in there. Or so I thought. I returned from doing something with the snakes to find this: (Look at that goofball, clinging on ot the basket like Spiderman!)

Adorable! I am curious as to how he managed to stay on the side of the laundry basket. The rear legs have the holes to grab hold of, but what's keeping the front half from sliding down? And by the way, just love how well-worn your laundry basket is! The missing chunks are very familiar to many a basket of mine!
 
He apparently has secret powers! I'd replace that basket if I could ever find one I liked as much...
 
Krusty is a cutie! I think thats one of the best looking turtles I've seen - I'm not sure why though! He just seems to have such personality!
 
I can't wait to build their new encolsure this spring! I finally feel rested enough from Fort Tort and am ready to tackle it! It's going to be 12x12, with a pond, (shallow enough for boxies) a huge fallen tree for climbing, and a weather-proof heated little house. Box turtles are _really_ fun. They are very food-oriented, and since I am the food-bringer, that makes them very people-oriented!

I love Box turtles. When I was a teen I used to rescue them off the roads, then take them home and keep them over the summers. We built a nice outdoor pen and so every summer my brother and I collected the turtles that me, him, and my parents would find (and my grandparents who lived next door). One summer I think we ended up with a dozen turtles! So my brother and I each had six. Most of them were Box turtles but one or two were Wood turtles. We'd always release them in the fall. And wouldn't you know it, every summer after that one of the box turtles we kept would actually come back! It was so cool. We'd always feed him when he came back so maybe he kept coming back for the good food, I don't know, but it was really neat!

Heck, what am I talking about, I STILL rescue turtles off the road. I actually keep a box in my vehicle all summer long for that reason. Then I bring them home and release them on my 3 acre property complete with a little stream, but not without trying to feed them first, hehe. We've got a garden in which I dig up earthworms for any turtle visitors I get. :)

Anyways, I never knew Box Turtles could be so much fun! You have definitely changed my mind about them with all of your pictures!!

Cool! I'd be SO excited if it were me! I'd totally have at least two box turtles if I could do something like that!

Tell me though, do you HAVE to hibernate them? I'd really like to keep box turtles some day but honestly I don't know how I would keep them in captivity outside of just keeping them during summers like I used to as a teen.
 
You don't have to brumate them, but if they are outside and you can brumate them without freezing, that's healthier for them.

I can only have two, legally. Of this species, anyway, the native one. Krusty is a Florida Box Turtle, and Fagalo is an Eastern Box Turtle. I can have two of any of these: Florida, Eastern, Gulf Coast and Three-Toed. They are all subspecies.

Both of mine are rescues.

K, so if you keep them indoors then you don't have to brumate them?

And how did you find your rescues?

Heh, all my critters were rescues, I prefer it that way.
 
yeah, i wish i could have a turtle. my parents heard a rumor that they carried salmonilla so i havent been able to keep any of mine. i had a painted turtle that i caught at a friends pond . (never got that one home) and i had a baby softshell turtle that i found at the river, but one of my little brother's friends killed it when he tried to play with it and let it dry out.
