My son's latest journal post for his new corn snake, Jasper:
15 Aug 2005
Today was great. I got to handle Jasper twice today. It way the first time I held him. He feels so awesome. He was a little cool to the touch but not cold, and the warm side of his tank is 85 so I’m not going to worry.
The first time I handled him for only a couple of minutes, (I didn’t want to stress him out, and I wanted to wait 48 hours for his meal, that he had eaten on Saturday, to digest) but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.
The second handling was much more thorough. I just placed him on my warm hands and he eased his way about them. I actually learned some stuff too. First of all, I looked all around him and found his cloaca (although I did no the general location of a cloaca, I had never seen one). I also noticed he moved around in different ways. In one way, in which he was not coiled, he just wiggled back and forth and went pretty quickly. The second way, in which he was all coiled up, he just kind of inched his way slowly. His whole body was making a kind of pulsating movement. I also noticed in both ways he moved, he used his prehensile tail to grab on to my pinkie.
By handling him I got a closer look at his colors. He really is looking gorgeous. He has a brown heart-shape blotch on top of his head, which I think most, if not all, corn snakes have. His body blotches are mostly dark brown, but there are a few blackish ones. His background color is tan getting more yellow towards his head. His belly scales are black and white.
Well handling Jasper made my day. I feel much closer to him now that I have handled him. It will probably only get better as he and I bond more and he gets used to me. I can’t wait to handle him tomorrow so I can be with the best snake in the world that I love so much.
