Jasper's Journal Entry #2: Handling Jasper

My son's latest journal post for his new corn snake, Jasper:

15 Aug 2005

Today was great. I got to handle Jasper twice today. It way the first time I held him. He feels so awesome. He was a little cool to the touch but not cold, and the warm side of his tank is 85 so I’m not going to worry.

The first time I handled him for only a couple of minutes, (I didn’t want to stress him out, and I wanted to wait 48 hours for his meal, that he had eaten on Saturday, to digest) but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.

The second handling was much more thorough. I just placed him on my warm hands and he eased his way about them. I actually learned some stuff too. First of all, I looked all around him and found his cloaca (although I did no the general location of a cloaca, I had never seen one). I also noticed he moved around in different ways. In one way, in which he was not coiled, he just wiggled back and forth and went pretty quickly. The second way, in which he was all coiled up, he just kind of inched his way slowly. His whole body was making a kind of pulsating movement. I also noticed in both ways he moved, he used his prehensile tail to grab on to my pinkie.

By handling him I got a closer look at his colors. He really is looking gorgeous. He has a brown heart-shape blotch on top of his head, which I think most, if not all, corn snakes have. His body blotches are mostly dark brown, but there are a few blackish ones. His background color is tan getting more yellow towards his head. His belly scales are black and white.

Well handling Jasper made my day. I feel much closer to him now that I have handled him. It will probably only get better as he and I bond more and he gets used to me. I can’t wait to handle him tomorrow so I can be with the best snake in the world that I love so much.

That's really neat - sometimes its fun to sit inside the head of a 12 year old. (Good job Mom & Dad!)

I think its wonderful that your son is writing this journal. If you read some of the past posts on this forum you will find that not all young people go into this hobbie with as much thought as you and your son have. He sounds like a great kid.

And as for looking through the eyes of a 12 year old... what's wrong with that. When it comes to the marvelous things in nature....I still do. I'm holding my snake right now and love it and always will. She calms me down and lets me know that the world's not so bad after all.

I think my post was mis-interpreted. I meant what I said sincerely...am still trying to figure out how it sounds 'off'. I have a 7 year old and I love hearing his thoughts and I have really enjoyed Jasper's journal. When I said 'sitting inside the head of a 12 year old' I was thinking of my own son and how neat it is to experience things through his eyes / feelings. I am sorry if it didn't come out that way.

Hi Deb,

I totally agree with you and didn't sound off at all. Me, I was just saying that I try to look at things in nature and see them the way a kid does and just enjoy them for what they are instead of thinking adult things like about pollution and endangered species and stuff, and try to "KIS" Keep it simple, when enjoying nature....like a kid does. I can't wait to have kids and enjoy nature with them and enjoy it through their eyes.

Its a little :-offtopic , but I really admire your diverse collection. You've got to do a photo shoot some day and really show them all off and post, post, post

Thanks!!
Yup - and each one is different and has a different personality. It's really fun! I just posted the first corn we got ("Our Angel") on the photo page tonight. She's what started it all! I've posted a bunch of them last weekend ("Our Motley Crew and Friends" and "Wear Protective Lenses"). I'll do another photo shoot in a few weeks.
My son loves them and really enjoys helping out with them. I hope he's as articulate and expressive when he is 12. I've been so impressed with Jasper's son and all the work and research he's put into it. It's so important that he knows what a great job he's done!
