leopard gecko's!

i am thinking of getting a leopard gecko quite soon, as i have a spare 20 gal aquarium with a mesh lid. i know some of you on the forums have some (or many), so i just have a few questions i wanted to ask you guys with lots of experience with leos.

what is the prefered substrate for leopard geckos? (as juvies, and as adults)
do you prefer a UTH or an infrared heat lamp as a heat source?
any other precautions?

ooooh i just can't wait to fill the spare aquarium!

The best thing for the leos' would be paper towels or newspaper. Sand and other substrates are very easy to ingest, and when feeding 4 live prey items a day, its really easy for them to become compacted. Incandescent heat light's work better then UTH for leos, IMO.

The best tip I can say, is fill a small lid with a teaspoon of calcium, and leave it in the tank, the leos' will lick it up, and its great for them.

Good luck, its been a while since I have had them, lol.

I have found that tile ( like you would get at a hardware store) works best also they need belly heat to digest their food so a UTH would be best also if you want to know more detailed information i would suggest checking out http://www.geckoforums.net/index.php its a forum for leopard geckos :D

I have 3 leopard geckos 1 male and 2 females. I use a heat mat (all the time) and a moonlight bulb (in the winter months). I use repti sand, but will be using paper towels when my eggs hatch for the hatchlings, to avoid impaction. I leave a bowl of calcium powder in the vivarium at all times and also dust the crickets, hoppers and mealworms with nutrobal 2 times a week and calcium powder 5 times a week. this is to keep up calcium levels in my females during breeding season. I have a moss box in there viv all the time to facilitate shedding. If you have any questions you can message me if you want and I will try to help.

I have leopard geckos and they are great pets. I use paper towel as a substrate and use an UTH for a heating source. I highly recommend checking out the geckoforums.net too. Good luck with your new pet. I have to warn you though they are kinda addicting.

I have mine on Repti-Carpet. It's simple to maintain and the gecko moves on it easily. I also use a UTH with a thermostat to regulate it. Be sure to have a hide on the warm and cool sides. I use moss bedding in the hides and dampen the "cool" side bedding for aiding with sheds.

Enjoy your gecko! :bird:
