Life Update: Dogs

Jaded_Heart

Prymal Reptiles
I haven't been on here in quite a while, so I wanted to post an update. The reason I've been MIA is because over the course of 2013, my beloved dog fell ill with cancer. I ended up selling off almost all of my reptiles to help with his medical bills, and on December 16th, 2013... my baby gave up the fight.

I am not sure if this holds true for Reptiles as well, but as far as dogs are concerned, You can have many dogs in your life, and love them all dearly... but there is always that ONE dog... that just owns you heart and soul. My family calls them "Heart Dogs"... Well Leo was my Heart Dog. There was never.. and will never be... another dog like him.

R.I.P my precious Tiny Dancer.

So I don't want to close out this thread on a sad note. So with all that was said, it goes without saying that I am the type of person who isn't happy without a dog in my life. I knew I did not want to get another Chinese Crested, because I know me, and I'd be looking for Leo in that dog and it wouldn't be fair to the new pup, So I went researching breeds. and I decided on a relatively rare breed called a Xoloitxcuiltli (Mexican Hairless) and chose the medium size of the breed. after speaking to several breeders, I made my choice. So Introducing now

Relic the Miniature Xoloitzcuintli!

I'm so sorry for your loss! And your new dog is adorable!!

I am going through the same thing with my Bella. Instead of selling off snakes, I took out a big loan, and opened a credit card, to cover the cancer diagnosis and surgery expenses. (And of course my truck took this opportunity to have everything possible go wrong, one thing after another- fuel pump, water pump, starter...) Some VERY generous friends helped out a LOT with expenses. It's worth every penny, even if it only buys her another year or two.

My condolences on your loss. There is nothing quite like the bond with a special dog. May relic become another heart dog for you.

So sorry for your loss.

My own Heart dog is declining at the age of 13 and it's killing me. I can not even imagine if I lost her.

I love the ears on your new addition :)

I love his little wrinkly forehead! If he was my dog, he'd have a thousand outfits to keep him warm. And probably some sun clothes for summer!

thank you for all the kind words. Leo's cancer was Transitional Cell Carcinoma (Bladder Cancer) near the end he became incontinent and lost his appetite. I used to work at a vet when I was younger and whenever someone would bring in an ill or elderly dog that was so far gone it couldn't walk and seemed to not even be aware of it's surroundings, just skin and bones... it would break my heart. I understand how hard it can be to let go, but I made a promise that I would never let Leo wither away like that. He did so much for me (I actually suffer from Anxiety and Depression, there were times that Leo was the only reason I would get out of bed during some of my darkest times)

Relic is not a replacement, he is "a new beginning". He is helping a lot, being a wild child, he is keeping me from sinking into that dark place I don't need to be in. We go to classes and puppy socials, and in between we spend time practicing our lessons. I am aspiring with this guy to do canine Agility, and I might try showing him if he turns out nice enough!

We have several outfits already, here in PA the snow has been violent and poor Relic isn't very cold-friendly!

The best SnowSuit! Love how it covers all 4 legs!

Now he needs little boots! I was looking on Sierra Trading Post today, at dog clothes. Every couple weeks they have a 35% off coupon, if you are on their mailing list. They have the most adorable raincoats and coveralls. AND Baxter Boo has TONS of dog clothes, and really good sales.

For now I am trying to just buy the clothes we need to get us through this last stretch of winter, since he's only 15 weeks old tomorrow, he will grow out of everything he has right now!

The Black Xolos actually do't need Sunscreen. They are a breed created by nature, and live semi-wild in Mexico even today. their skin is very resilient and it produced more melanin (tans) in the summer to prevent sun damage! Breeders say the Xolos with lighter skin do need protection because they lack those crucial melanins.

So sorry for the loss you had to go through! It sounds like you had a wonderful bond between the two of you.

I am happy you are able to welcome another dog into your life. May you have many happy years together!

Do they get hot, though, because of no insulation?

They can actually sweat! I've already found evidence of Relic sweating when he sleeps all curled up, the skin becomes damp like human skin where it folds onto it'self. they've lived out in the elements in mexico for over 3,000 years. they are very well adapted to that type of environment. :)

The downside to a sweating dog, is that he needs to be bathed weekly to prevent pores from clogging and acne from developing!

I am also sorry for your loss ((hugs))

Your new fuzziebaby is super cute. I think he might need a blanky though, that snowsuit has an awfully drafty behind area lol.

Dog people unite :) My heart dog is gone too, her ashes are in a pretty little carved wood box. I still have 7 others to keep me on my toes.

Sorry for your loss....I know how hard it is. Your new guy is adorable! Love the pic w/ the jacket :)

So sorry for your loss. It is never an easy thing to go through. I work in a clinic and even for us it never gets easier. My Harrison is my heart dog, he will be 9 this October. I've never really been a fan of the hairless breeds but holy cow is he not the cutest thing!!! I love his little face!

So sorry for the loss of your little Leo. I lost my heart dog 6 years ago, but could never remain dog-less. I've got 3 senior rescues now. Relic is a cool-looking dog, and I'm sure you'll make many memories with him through the years to come!
