Low numbers breeder - shipping vs. shows?

TrpnBils

22 is not enough snakes
This is our first year breeding the corns and we only have 1 female so we won't be getting any huge numbers (expecting eggs in the next week or so).

If YOU were in this situation with low numbers and no intention of keeping any, how would you choose to sell them off: internet/shipping or selling at a show and WHY?

Obviously I'm not Fedex certified, and I don't know of any other relatively simple ways to ship. I've only ever bought two snakes that were shipped to me and both of them came through some other method of shipping, although the name of that service escapes me.

On the other hand, I can't see the point in renting out a whole table at a show for, say, 10 snakes....

A breeder friend of ours will take them wholesale, but we'd be bypassing about half of what we might otherwise make on them, which won't be much to begin with...so they'll have a home to go to regardless, but I'd like to try to sell them myself rather than go the wholesale route. How would you do it?

I'd look into splitting a table if you have any friends going to a show, or try to sell on the internet and use ship your reptiles if you don't want to get fed ex certified... (disclaimer, I don't use SYR and prefer fed ex but a lot of people do)
Wholesale is the way to go if you don't want to hassle with all the work of selling them individually or don't want to keep putting food and time into caring for them all.

How exactly does SYR work? I've looked at their site, but all I see is how I get a quote and how I can buy shipping supplies.... I see nothing on exactly how I go about shipping the thing (i.e. Do I just box it up and call them or what?)

The shipping service you are thinking of might be ShipYourReptiles. Using UPS. Probably a good idea to get FedEx certified, eventually. It's not _that_ bad.

I'm only looking at three clutches this season, two of which will be split with the owner of the other parent. One of the split clutches will be all hold-backs.

Maybe you could share a table at a local show with another breeder?

For your first clutch, and only one this year, I would go wholesale. Get yourself Fed Ex certified so you can sell online in the future. Definitely get with someone to share a table at a show, it cuts costs.

I think it really depends on what you are producing. If it is a clutch of lava bloods then I would not wholesale. If it is snows, amels, anerys, hypos....wholesale away.

it'll be anerys, anery lavs, ghost, ghost lavs, and possibly some amels, snows, or snow lavs depending on a possible het in each parent.

I agree with what has been said with the following comments. I have found that for the most part what I have sold at shows are the low end corns. I go to three shows, 2 of which are small herp society shows, and for the most part people are coming looking for an inexpensive starter snake for their kid. Even at the larger show it feels like people just want the inexpensive snakes and are not willing to pay for anything more than a normal, anery or amel. Most people know very little about the morphs and the genetics. The amount you will get for the lower end snakes at a show vs a wholesaler is not a lot so unless you like doing the shows, wholesale them. I don't know how hard it will be to find a wholesaler if you have just one clutch. I have only wholesaled twice to two different people and last year I could not find a wholesaler.

I have not done well with on line sales but I have also not taken the time to make sure that my name and snakes are known all over the internet. It really helps if you post a lot here and on other sites so you get a reputation - a good one preferably.

I have a wholesaler lined up - a breeder friend of ours who we've talked to about it beforehand with the additional comment of "If you want to try selling on your own, go for it and I'll just take what you can't offload somewhere else". That won't be an issue for us. In a year or two we should be getting 4 or 5 different species producing, so we'll definitely hit the shows then, but this will be our only clutch of any species this year.

If it were me, I'd keep what I thought were ghost lavs and then wholesale the rest.

Out of curiousity, why would you hold back the ghost lavs? I'd rather not hold anything as I'm already running out of room, but if you've got a good reason in mind I might reconsider...lol

I just figured you were breeding for a target morph and with that being the hardest to hit, I assumed those would be the ones you would hold back.

Nah, I don't even know what they go for. I'm still trying to figure out how the heck to tell any and all of those apart...haha.

Any info I find on ghost lavs is usually "Is this one?" which is usually followed by "I don't think it is", so I don't even know what I'd look for right now. I've never owned a hatchling corn and I can't find many photos of adult morphs. I'm hoping to see a wide variety or at least clearcut distinction between them when they hatch so I can go from there.

Right now I'm trying to research iris color as that seems to be one of the things referenced most in the debate over ghost lavs, ghosts, lavs, and anerys since they all seem to look the same as hatchlings.
