This is the start of my first corn snake's progression thread!

Her name is Maya and she hatched in June under chris68's care. I'll have to get her specific stats from him when I go get her this weekend, but I have a picture that he took of her!

I contacted him some time ago looking for an anery from him and his Miami clutch unexpectedly hatched some! When I saw her picture, I had a feeling that she would end up being mine! That thread is here: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131326 (Baby #2!)

My husband and I will be driving down this weekend to pick her up, oddly enough, in the town that I grew up in! It will be fun having the breeder so close by so that we can keep in touch. Plus, she won't have to go through the stress (and expense) of shipping!

Oh my gosh, I remember when he posted her!!! She's amazing!!! You _have to_ post updates!!! I don't think anyone remembers anery Miamis, before.

Updates will be posted whenever I can! I'm already obsessed with her and I'm sure her first week here will just be me sitting in front of her viv and creepin' on her!

All of the anery pictures look the same to me, mostly, so for now, the only thing that makes her extra special to me is that she's my Maya. Chris mainly picked her out for me. When I first contacted him, the only specific I gave was that I wanted a female anery A or B that had what he felt was the best temperament for me and after she hatched and got settled, he nudged me toward Maya!

She is named for one of my favorite poets, Maya Angelou. My signature username is from one of her most famous books/poems. All of our pets with lifespans over 4 years have names that begin with "M", so Maya just fit!
 
I finally have my baby and she's more than I could have ever hoped for! Chris was wonderful to chat with and I learned a lot from him. I could not have asked for a better baby. He definitely matched us together well! She is so calm and patient with me as a new handler.

As I said before, the anery pictures looked the same to me, but the picture above doesn't really show off her sides. Chris showed me a "normal" anery and the difference was clear as day! Maya almost has leopard print markings on her sides!

I only have one picture of her so far because I brought her home and I'm letting her relax. According to Chris, she is about to shed and obviously needs some time to acclimate to her new home! The next picture I get of her will hopefully be when she's all shiny and new after her first shed with me!

Was real nice to meet you too, and looks like Maya is going to have a great home. She was my favorite of the clutch; I like the pinstripe mots, but there was just something neat about her. Enjoy and keep us posted :)
 
Alright, pictures incoming!

I went to peek in on her today and she was curled up in her vines alongside a shed! I couldn't resist taking her outside for pictures instead of letting her rest.

On our way outside, checking the camera out! I ended up with one good picture on our way out because she was all up in the lens with curiosity!

My gorgeous girl loves curling and twirly around my fingers, and I love it as well! She is so calm and gentle.

I can't even put into words how happy I am with Maya!
 
Now that she has had a week to settle in, she got her first meal today!

It was the first snake feeding for me, but I wasn't as nervous as I thought I'd be. I thawed the pinkie as per chris68's directions while I got my postal scale out to weigh her. She came out to 10 grams. Does that sound right? I have no clue and the scale was being a little fritzy tonight! The tare button was giving me fits.

Anyway... it wasn't quite what I had expected, but I was happy with the result. She did not strike or throw any coils on the pinkie. She simply slithered up, very casually opened her mouth and moved around until she got at the right angle to gobble it up. She got it down pretty fast and had no jaw troubles. I'd say 10 seconds from jaws open to jaws closed.

She's resting now for the next 48 hours! I'm not sure what to expect after this and when I'll find a "surprise" to clean up!
 
Congrats on the first successful feed! 10 grams sounds just right judging by your pictures. Thus far, none of my snakes have ever struck or coiled a pinkie. Usually mine start doing that around the fuzzy/hopper stage, or some not even until they're on adult mice!
 
Thank you for the reply and congratulations! I'm glad to confirm the ~10 grams and the positive feeding response. As a first-time owner and first feeding, I think a solid strike would have frightened me a bit! I was bracing myself for it, though!

As I said, I am letting her rest now, but I read to check at 24 hours to see if there is still a visible lump so that I can know that she is getting the correct size of prey. I took careful note of the size of her lump after she got it down to her stomach so that I can hopefully know how to compare tomorrow.

Chris gave me plenty of pinkies to last me until I set up a good long-term source for food. I sent a few emails out to local-ish feeder breeders and there is one business that I keep trying to phone, but no luck so far. I'll see what I can see at the next reptile show on the 24th.
 
She was a good feeder right from the start, wish every baby was like her. Keep us posted Kirsten :)
