Maya's Story

What a gorgeous girl! Miamis are my down-right favorite, and that anery is just a fantastic contribution! :]

She is just the best, Chris. I love her to bits!

I peeked in on her tonight and I don't see a "visible lump" like I did when she had swallowed the pinkie. Does this mean that she needs larger pinkies? (I think the ones you sent home with me are day-old?) Obviously I didn't get her out to carefully inspect for a lump, but there certainly was no obvious one.

Thank you, Agonistes! (I feel weird saying thanks regarding compliments on her since chris68 hatched her out, but I guess I am her official representative now!)

She is definitely becoming a fast snake ambassador of sorts around here. Everyone that sees her falls in love with her "leopard print"! People that said "ew" when hearing I had a new pet snake turned right around and said how pretty she is!

No problem! You could try the Munson feeding chart to see what kind of food she needs, it's based on weight.

A heuristic I always hear is 1 to 1.5x the thickest part of her body is how big the food should be.

A member here, MichBill, made a handy-dandy feeding PDF of that plan. You can get it over at this thread: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118271

Cheers! :]

She should be ready for bigger pinkies once she eats what I sent her home with. I also can't take much credit, the snakes did the work ;).

My baby girl is still 10g and ate another thawed pink tonight readily! She hadn't even gotten the whole thing down yet before she crawled over to my hand to use my fingers as a ladder back into her bin from her weighing/feeding container! Her expression was just "Thanks for the dinner, Mama! I'm off to hang out in my log for a few days now!" like a kid running out the door with a mouthful of sandwich to catch the bus!

(Still no complete viv... bit of a FUBAR with my freshwater aquarium and so things are being moved around greatly. Maya's tank will go where the old aquarium was and the new aquarium will be housed in Maya's spot, most likely. )

She is just precious! You can expect a shed about once a month, maybe a little more often. You can tell she's going blue by: she won't be out at night as usual, and when you weigh her before feeding it will be a bigger weight gain than usual, due to not pooping out the last meal, due to being inactive and blue.

I like to measure my snakes by laying them next to a ruler and taking a photo. And then I go to serpwidgets.com to measure them.

She actually struck at her pinkie tonight! Not a hard or particularly aggressive strike, but just a very swift bite unlike her past two feedings which were "Oh, okay. Food, yum!"

She's still weighing in at 10 grams. Is this normal? I don't want to stunt her growth or anything!

Maya is doing wonderfully and was even perfectly content to sit in my hand this evening!

She is still only weighing in at 10 grams after all of these weeks. I don't know if I should be worried or not!

Her feeding bump disappears pretty quickly, but since she hasn't gained weight, she shouldn't technically bump up in food weight, correct? I don't want to get something too big for her (or give her two small pinkies if I can't find any pinks larger than what I've got) and risk a regurge. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself!

The baby will gain about 1/3 of the weight of the prey from each feeding, so if you are feeding a 2 gram pink, the snake is gaining less than a gram with each meal. If you are weighing on a scale that only weighs in grams, it takes a while to see a change. I use a little My Weigh scale that weighs in tenths of grams, for babies. Also, she will most likely lose weight after a shed.

Thank you, Nanci! That makes me feel less paranoid! I'll wait a few more feedings before I freak out. I use a digital postage scale that was rather inexpensive. It weighs ounces to a tenth, but apparently not grams?

Anyway! She just went blue and I don't want to startle her, so I'm leaving her be for a few days. If I understand correctly, when her skin goes cloudy, it will clear up and then in 2-3 days she'll shed?

Should I wait until she sheds to feed her? I don't want to stretch her tummy out and ruin the shed. Oh God, I'm such a paranoid mama.

I would wait until after she sheds to feed her. Lots of snakes refuse to eat when they're in blue, and babies might regurge if they eat when blue.

Glad to hear that my instincts were correct, hypnoctopus! I'll hold off until she sheds. Fingers crossed for a nice shed! (Though I have no reason to believe otherwise, it always worries me!)

My baby girl decided to surprise me by pulling a shed while I was holding her! There we were, sitting on the couch, when she started rubbing her head against my hand. I managed to grab my phone right before she finally got her jaw loose! (Sorry for the vertical video.)

Awesome, this snake was such a neat surprise when she hatched out. You have the only Miami line anery being posted, so keep us updated :)
