Mazuri vs. Sun Seed

I can't find Mazuri anywhere close to me so I buy Sun Seed Critter Cubes.

I researched the analysis on both and found this:
Sun Seed 22% Protein, 5% Crude Fat, and 5% Crude Fiber
Mazuri 16% Protein, 6% Crude Fat, and 6% Crude Fiber

Can any rodent breeders tell me which numbers are better for the mice?

The only big difference I can tell in the ingredients is that Mazuri has "porcine animal fat preserved with BHA" in it and Sun Seed doesn't.
 
I use sun seed brand stuff, it's always treated me well. Currently using lab blocks, Hamster Vita, Cockateil Vita, and Parakeet food.
 
If you're not going to use lab blocks or a good pellet formula, go with Sun Seed. Pregnant and lactating does will need the huge amount of protein. But, I seriously recommend a lab block or pellet formula, like the Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health food. At Petco.com (the link provided), you can get a 5lb bag for 6 bucks. The reason I suggest something like that is because anyone who has had a pet rodent and fed it a seed/mix diet will tell you this: "They pick out their favorite thing(s) and leave the rest." Thus, they don't get all the nutrition they need. I remember when I had my rat, he would pick out sunflower seeds and a few other tiny things, and that was it. Those were also the things in the mix that had the fat, so I had a rather fat (but healthy rat, I guess; he lived until he was about 5 and a half years old) rat.
 
What I am using is block type. Sun Seed just calls them critter cubes.

I buy 50lb bags at a time for $42.00. I have quite a few mice. I am sure my local pet shop owner is make a few dollars on me, but hey it's a business.
 
The only issue I see is the high protein. Some say it doesn't matter, some do. I know I was feeding a high protein and the mice had real juicy stools and they had some skin issues. I switched them to a lower protein and they were good to go. Maybe it was something else in the feed, but everyone told me the reason I was having the issues was because of the high protein.
 
I probably could do better for my feeders, had a shock when i actually looked at the values of the granola, bran and Cheerios I'm using for my rats. All were like 7% protein or less.
do you think all Petco stores have the Sunseed critter cubes you mentioned?

I never really looked at the food values of the things ppl fed feeder rodents.:awcrap: Kinda always thought fat and carbohydrates were more important than protein for them. DOH!
It's time I change what I've always done with the feeders
 
I don't get my feed at Petco. I get it from a local petshop yho orders it for me. Sorry I don't know what Petco or Petsmart has. The closest one of either of those is 1 hour and 20 minutes from me. Gotta love the mountains of North Carolina. If they could drink Moonshine that I can get right down the street. LMAO!!!
 
Petco has stuff for PET mice. I don't think many pet mice owners feed their mice a pellet, but a seed mix. I did with my mice and rats, and while they were fat, they were healthy. I think that may have had to do with the nightly treats or constant handling I gave them.
Also, I'm pretty sure the fat and carbohydrates are just as important, just not sure how they affect mice.

I use the Mazuri F6.

22% protein, I would be afraid of having fat mice and rats. Fat rodents tend to have lower birth counts(if your looking for numbers). I only pay 23-24 bucks for a 50 lb bag. I order at the feed store. If you have a feed store that deals in Purina products, they should be able to get it. If you continue using the Sun seed, give us an update to how well it is working and if you get any problems from it....
 
It sure is nice to hit the JACKPOT some times. I checked on Mazuri at a local Purina shop/store within 4 miles from my house. Sure enough they can get Mazuri products for me and sure enough it is A LOT cheaper for me. Then the owner said he might have some Rodent Breeder 9F in a trailer on the yard (I will ask for 6F when they reorder). He talked with his yard manager and sure enough there was 10 bags. I asked how much it was and they told me $19.35/bag. I am sure my mouth went to the asphalt when I heard that. I bought 1 bag and it is $20.85 tax included/ 50 Lbs. I was paying $42.00/50lbs. Turns out there is someone in the county doing the same thing I am. Man it feels good to have people like you all to give members of this site such leads and wonderful information.

So thanks for all the Purina Dealer leads you all gave me!
