Methadone

smigon

Old enough to know better
Jim and I go to a pain management clinic, he has a bad knee that is too late to fix surgically but too early to replace, and I have a bone spur on my tailbone (getting old blows). Since they prescribe Hydrocodone for each of us we get drug tested (urine) every few months. Since we started going there my UA always comes up positive for Methadone. Our original PA looked into what other meds I was on and we figured it out, I was taking a stomach med (Promethazine) that caused the false positive. I have since gone off of that med, and thought nothing of it.

That PA left the office 2 months ago and we were assigned a different PA, when we went and saw her the other day she had this weird look on her face and said very sternly "you tested positive for Methadone". I told her that yes, I always have, it was the stomach meds but then I realized I didn't take them anymore. I didn't tell her that, she said she would look into it.

I got online today and figured out what caused the false positive now: Diphenhydramine (in my sleep aid) and Benadryl! So if you are accused of being a recovering meth addict, tell them you're tired and stuffy!

I tried pot once, I just never exhaled.

Doesn't seem like a very accurate test if at least two common OTC drugs can test positive for methadone.

I learned, at work, that methadone is often used for pain control. I see it in preemies, the most. Odd.

Diphenhydramine is the same as Bendryl (it's just used as a sleep aid because it makes most people tired, and the antihistamine effects don't really matter if you're not an allergy sufferer, and it's fairly safe for frequent use), but it's still a really common OTC drug to cause a false positive, especially since it's in so many combination medications.

I'd be worried about your doctors acting strangely and seemingly judging you for testing positive for methadone, too... they are in no place to judge.
