Moldy Lavender

Okay, so not really moldy, but that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw him. Or her. Haven't checked yet. Anyway, this lavender shed yesterday and looks very odd....

See all the white dots that look like reflections of light? Those are actually white dots. They feel smooth on most of the body. See down near the tail where there are LOTS of white dots? In that area the ventral scales feel rough, like they aren't quite laying down flat. Bacterial infection? Incubation stress?

I have no idea, but I like that little snake.

Is that a reflection on the nose or is that more white spots?

If those are part of the patern, it would be very interesting to see how it develops. I hope it is nothing bad for the little snake.

Hmmm... I didn't notice that before. I checked her out again, and the white spots on her nose are.... white spots on her nose! How cute!

I did have a couple hatch like that this year -- with the white stuff dried to them. This one has already shed though, which is why I thought it looked odd. Maybe it didn't shed completely? I'll give it a soak tomorrow and see if anything changes.

The snake in the pic I posted in that thread lost those marks when it shed. I haven't heard from Cat if hers did or not. Maybe there's something in the water up there in Washington! ;)

Hey Ronda,

I too have a couple of hatchlings which have shown this odd speckling when they hatched.

One is an Amel & the other sibling is a Normal. The Amel, more affected than her sister, felt rough on her mid dorsal area & tail where the 'bubbling/blistering' was most noticable.

Each have had their first slough & now feel as they should (i.e. smooth). However, the Amel has retained a small amount of this 'bubbling' effect on the ventral area of her tail.

The eggs in this clutch were not 'stressed' in any way, however, they did 'pip' earlier than expected.

I have not mated this particular pair together before (Candy cane x Okeetee h. Amel/Anery), therefore, there is no history of previous progeny.

I consider it a slight oddity & hope that the hatchlings thrive........they have yet to consume their first pinkie, now day 2 after first slough.

Best...........Alexandria.

Wow...
those look weird~

I hope that its not any infection or anything like that....
keep us updated~

Oops.

Hehe.... This lavender is housed with two other hatchlings, and when I saw skins, I assumed they had all shed. She no longer looked pre-shed, so it made sense. Anyway, y'all were right all along! I soaked her last night and got the skin off.... no more white spots! Poop -- I was looking forward to raising a white-spotted lavender!

Have any of you had hatchlings with it on their eyes?

Yes Khaman,

The Amelanistic female (pic posted earlier) was affected on her eyes. I was, understandably, a little concerned with respect to possible problems with vision...............however, the first slough was complete & her eyes are normal at this time.

I will retain both this lady & her clutch sister, until after their next slough, that I can be assured that there is no 'lurking' problem.

Alexandria.

Thanks that makes me feel much better. I have already lost one lav in this clutch I would really hate to lose another.
