My Bargain Baby Boa

I saw an advertisement for Colombian x Guyanan Boa babies, marked down from $79.99 to $50.00. I also noticed that the seller was within easy driving distance (in Ocala, more or less.) To make a long story short, I had sort of decided that I liked the purple Guyana Boas and that I wanted that type of Boa. So, I figured I might as well check out these half-Guyanas. Supposedly, Colombians are easier to care for and have better temperaments than some Guyanan BCs. I looked at about a dozen babies, and this one stood out for a few reasons. First, this one is not very dark. Many of the others looked darker and also pink, while this one has always had a slight purple tinge. Guyanans don't have many saddles compared to Colombians, and this one only has about 12, before the tail begins. Most of the others looked more aberrant, especially the tails. The deciding factor was the personality. This one is very calm. I've had him (I think it's a male now) for about 2 months. He eats f/t hoppers or small adult mice with no problems. Hopefully he won't get too big. He was on the smaller side, compared to many of his siblings.

Males... probably 5 to 7 feet, but not that thick... maybe 15 to 20 lbs., especially if fed moderately (not overfed.) The females tend to be both longer and a lot thicker, and probably closer to 30 to 40 lbs. in weight. That's what I have read and heard, anyway. If there are any Boa people here, maybe they can answer you. Unfortunately I don't know too much about this snake's parents and family history.

As far as the temperment issue I think that varies from snake to snake, being a boa or a python or whatever. Estimating 5 to 7 feet may be on the small size, If it were a standard BCI I would think your estimate is right but being a BCC to a BCI cross it may get a bit larger if it is a female it could greatly surpass the 7 foot mark. I dont have any of the BCC in our collection but if we happen to find more space Id sure like to get a Surinam Boa.
B.C.I.=Boa Constrictor Imperitor
B.C.C.=Boa Constrictor Constrictor
Husbandry is similar to either type.
Hope this helps.

He looks great! Congrats on the bargain pick-up. :cheers:

Thanks. He does look nicer than many that sell for 3 to 4 times as much, or even more. I mostly wanted a pet, not a Boa to breed (probably not.) He probably won't have a bright red tail, which may be what some people pay $400+ for. But I still like the way the tail looks.

As far as the BCI/BCC issue that was brought up, some experienced people say that most of the specimens from Colombia are really BCC, so I don't know what he is. Most BCI have a lot more saddles, so he looks like a BCC, even if he's half and half.
