My pup Faun, what is she?

BooBoo18

Just 1, no 2, ok 3, um 4
On Valentines Day we brought two foster puppies home. There were a brother and a sister and had been born in Kentucky, at a vet office where they were waiting to be sent to our rescue. So we know and seen mom. She was black with tan markings with some long hair. Mom could be Sheltie, Border Collie, or Australian Shepard mix. All Faun's brothers and sisters kind of look like Shelties or Border Collies but Faun is a little short haired brindle.

So I am wondering what she is. I have some pics of Faun and her brother Bruno who has been adopted so just want to see what everyone thinks.

We decided we want to do a DNA test cause we are pretty curious about what her background is. That and also due to some communities having restrictions on owning "Pitbulls" maybe I will be able to either confirm or rule that breed out.

yup! she really looks like she's has some sort of hound in her.
her floppy ears and muzzles remind me of my old beagle, but I don't think anyone will know for sure what she truly is until you get that DNA test done.
which would be super interesting.

but none the less she looks like a beautiful happy doggie.

Plott hound is a good guess... I wouldn't put too much in the DNA tests...most of them are pretty inaccurate...around here we call them Carolina ditch dogs!

Being she is from Kentucky being a Plott Hound or at least part was something I was thinking too. I also was thinking maybe a greyhound/boxer mix which still does not bring in her mothers side. I have read about Plott Hounds and she certainly has some of those charecteristics. She is very smart, like to keep her nose to the ground when we are out walking. She does not bark often right now so its been hard to judge that.

I am reading up on the DNA tests so it really might be as Meg said, not too accurate. We are going to try it just out of curiosity. Anyway you go she is my happy little puppy and we love her to bits.

I did a little test online that showed pictures of dogs and you were supposed to decide what they were. Then they told you what the tests showed. Some of the breeds the DNA test suggested were so rare as to be almost never seen in the US...not sure how the dogs shown would have the breed in them. Just made me wonder. I should test my Ridgebacks sometime to see what comes up. I KNOW they are pure and I know they are from foundation stock that came into the US in the 50's when they first arrived. We would see if the test was accurate or not that way.

awe I love his ears. I guess I could just make it up but it would be nice to know what my pups background is. As it is when someone asks me what breed she is I tell them she is a rescue breed. Would Plott Hound work if her brothers and sister are all black and brown and white? I have a picture of the whole litter and also saw that Plott Hounds are all some type of Brindle.

Thanks NonVenomous, surprisingly that is the first thing everyone guesses is she is a pitbull mix, but like you I dont see it in her or her siblings. I am fine with her being pitbull but know there are some communities that restrict ownership which I think is wrong. I read the DNA test wont specify if a dog is a pitbull or not but will only tell if the dog is a breed that pits are derived from like an ASBT.

When I saw that picture of Bruno's face and then the first older pic of Faun laying down, my first thought was Boxer mix. When I worked at a doggy day camp, we had a pair of Boxer mix pups, and that picture of her laying down just looks so much like them! I agree with everyone else in that she has a lot of hound characteristics as well; wouldn't be able to guess which one, though. I, too, don't see pitbull; but living in San Antonio at least, I know that everyone instantly assumes that any mix bigger than a Chihuahua has pitbull in it.

I had a mutt we'd found off the streets. She was fluffy and small, and obviously had Rottweiler somewhere in there. I wanted to do the DNA test, too, but can't say it was accurate. Said she had Pharaoh Hound in the mix?? o_O Not sure where she got that here, but alright--it kind of explained her large ears. :p Anyway, Petsmart had a sale going where the DNA tests were half off, so you may wanna see if that sale goes up anytime soon. :] At any rate, Heinz 57 mixes--best flavor of dog out there. :3

Keep in mind, if her mum was a stray, there may be more than one father. Brindle is only found in a few breeds - the area could suggest plott hound and that last photo does show some sort of houndish-ness to her. The photo above that one, I see hound and some sort of bull-and-terrier type (could be APBT, could be anything else, really), which is not unusual these days.

Brindle is found in a lot of breeds...greyhound, boxer, dane, bully breeds of all sorts, mastiff breeds and derivatives of it such as merle and the like. I've found it in all sorts of mixed breeds and as such may be the result of the mixing of colorations....I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up on the DNA tests.

From what I read you are right Meg many breeds do have Brindle in them. One that surprised me was Sheltie. So brindle is not exclusive to only a couple of breeds. I checked our local Petsmart and no sale, but we did get one through the rescue we adopted Faun from. I am happy to do that as the money paid goes to the rescue!!

A friend of a friend used to call his dog a "curb setter" as he was a mixed breed of who knows what. A co-worker's sister tried the DNA test on her HUGE 90+ lb dog (who's mother was a known boxer) and that came back as 50% boxer, 25% mini dachsund and 25% manchester terrier..........yeah, no. There is NO way that dog is mini dachsund or machester terrier. He is 90+ lbs of solid muscle. I wanted to try the DNA test on my Harrison (1/2 lab, 1/2 shar pei) "just for giggles" and when I saw those results I said NEWP.

Fawn us adorable though :) It's amazing how many people think "pitbull" or "pitbull mix" when they see certain dogs. Almost every time they get it wrong.

Well we got the results back on Faun's DNA test I have to say I am kind of surprised of the results but not cause some of the guesses were in the mix. One of Faun's parents is a Lab and Newfoundland mix. Newfoundland??? Where did that come from she is not a really big dog. I can understand the Lab While on the other side she is mixed breed and a Boxer mix. I know Boxer was mentioned. Also what I thought was neat was in the mixed breed they named 5 breeds with the highest amount of DNA in the mix and one was Plott Hound. I have been reading about the Plott Hound and do see she has the personality going. LOL She also always leads with her front feet which is a Boxer thing much to my son's unhappiness.

We went through MARS Labs Wisdom Panel for mixed breeds and they were pretty fast.
