My skinny Craigslist rescue

She gaining, slowly but steady! Up to 199g last weigh-in. I increased her meals to 3 hairless fuzzies; I figure we'll do 3 or so feeds like those before switching to one adult mouse. Her slow but steady weight gain suggests her only health problem was not getting fed. :(

Here she wishing everyone a belated Happy Halloween:

That poor girl. At least she's gaining weight! She looks a million times better.

Love your nails!

She's so pretty, and her saddles look kind of purple in the pics. She is lucky to have you now.

Holy weight gain! The girl gained 17g in just a week! I was so thrown off by the number, I rechecked and rezeroed the scale, but the number stuck. I will say that when I took her out of her tank, she felt heavier in my hand--usually when I pick her up, I'm struck by the contradiction of what how heavy I expect a snake her size to feel like, and what she actually does. It wasn't quite so incongruous this time.

Check out all 216g of her! Just shows there's nothing wrong with her--she just needed to be fed.

And--the girl BIT me! Ha! I don't attribute this AT ALL to her being aggressive. She's excited and doesn't understand feeding yet. She was fed in her cage--the few times they fed her at all--so when she's hungry and I reach in the tank, she still is assuming OMG! FOOD! I think, to, that the regular feedings have awoken her appetite, and she isn't just hungry, she's HUNGRY.

Here's the extent of the damage she did, with her innocent face in the background. So vicious.

She bit me when I took her out to take her to her feeding tub, and didn't let go, like she thought I was food. (Really? Go with that reptilian brain, girl.) She still needs to learn to associate that green tub with food. Cleo gets very excited when I reach in her cage, but doesn't strike. The moment she goes into her feed tub, though, she's like OMG WHERE IS IT? I actually see the bite as a bit sad because of this--it's another sign she hasn't been handled much, fed consistently, or fed separately.

Gulp!

I think I'll do one more feeding of 3 hairless fuzzies, then bump her up to an adult mouse. Whoo hoo! Good girl!

Yeah, I wasn't upset with her at all. It didn't strike as aggressive, but just very hungry and very hyped up. I'm thinking this aspect of her will settle as meals become more regular, and her appetite less desperate.

And Nanci, much belated thanks for the compliments on my Halloween nails! :D My 4yro picked out the color this time, heh.

By the way, what do you guys think is a good goal weight for her, considering her age (4) and frame? I was thinking 300-350g or so.

She may have even been somewhat lethargic from her neglected state, so maybe now that she has spare calories to burn she's getting more of a personality!

As far as weight, I wouldn't be too concerned about the number, more about what her body shape looks like. My four year old corn, who has been well fed her whole life is close to 700 grams with a nice body shape.

I forgot to add that she's already looking so much better than when you got her.

I got very moved by this thread <3 I am glad to see there is more rescuer out there. I am mainly in dog rescue but thank you for opening your home to this little girl and she looks so much better than in the first picture.. Great work <3 I can't wait to see her restored to her full glory!

This is awesome, so glad you were able to rescue her from that horrible home. Can't wait to see her in a couple of months, hope you will keep posting on her progress. She's a beauty :)

hypnoctopus, she seems to have a personality similar to my classic corn Cleo. She gets very excited when I first reach into the tank, darting her head about following motion and flicking her tongue, but Cleo has learned I'm not food and doesn't strike. Runway went through a phase where she knew food was coming, but hopefully just now is realizing *I* am not food. ;) Like Cleo, she rattles if I disturb her at all while she's eating, but that's nothing I know. All normal--which is good! For such a skinny girl, "normal" is a sign of healthy. :)

Ravenessa, I support local horse rescues but can't do the fostering myself--I don't have the time, space, finances, or physical strength for it. (I just make sure our horses never go through what the rescues do!) But, I *can* rescue snakes, and seeing this poor girl on Craigslist, I had to. Bless you for taking in dogs! Heh, our dog is a rescue too--she was abandoned at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. She lived behind the trash bin for weeks, eating leftover chicken tossed to her by the station manager. Brother in law saw her when he stopped for gas this past March, sent pictures, and the rest is history. :) Lucy-girl is doing great now.

She was upgraded to one adult mouse last week, and she ate readily. After two more feedings of this, I'll switch to two adult mice weekly until she reaches a healthy weight, then I'll keep her on one mouse weekly.

She really is looking so much better--and look! She's 224g now! That's 36g up from when I brought her home. :D

I love seeing her progress too!

The links for the original images no longer work so I thought I'd report with my pics of Runway from iHerp. That way if someone comes across this thread they can see the dramatic changes she went through.

So, here is Runway before (she was actually 183g the first time I weighed her):

And here she is after about 6mos of regular meals:

She was actually over 400g when she went to her new permanent home! (With a member of this community, in fact. :D )

Thanks! And yeah, it was hard, but I found her a great home. I figured she could stay with me or we could sell her, so I offered her in the classified section here to see if anyone was interested. And ta-dah! Perfect home came along and I couldn't be happier for them both.

She's reportedly been bred and is gravid now, so I just may have to have one of her babies. :D

Glad for her getting a good home. I just hope her body is ready. Personally I would probably have let her rest for this season as her body has just recouped. Keeping fingers crossed she gets a nice clutch. <3

Yeah, I probably would have too; I tend to take the conservative and cautious (to occasionally paranoid ;) ) approach. But I fully trust her new owner. :) I Googled his name before selling Runway to him, and there was nothing but glowing reviews about him and the animals he's produced. He's a very experienced herper and breeder and she is in the best of hands.

I just can't get over how thin she was. It takes a long, lonnnng time to get a corn with an appetite like hers that skinny. :( They're such easy keepers--how could someone let that happen??

Yeah I am the same way.. Paranoid.. lol I amglad she got such a good home though <3 can't wait to see pics of her off spring!
