So I posted the thread about my snake biting me a few weeks ago...and I thought he was getting better, but now I'm starting to think he's not. Sometimes he strikes at my (mitten covered)hand like crazy when I get him out and sometimes he just tries to run away. I manage to get him out everytime and handle him for about 5-10 minutes. But during this whole time he is SO jumpy! It seems like every move I make, no matter how slow, scares him. And heres another weird thing: after he eats he gets REALLY crazy! I put him in a seperate box for his feedings and give him a couple of minutes to hang out after he's done, but he seems so angry. He's looks up at me in striking position, rattles his tail and is just terrifying! I wont even pick him up with mittens on, I just put a paper bag in there, let him crawl in, and then tranfer him to his vivarium. So my question is...how long does it take for a snake to stop this crazy behavior? He's not a hatchling, he's almost 5 months! I read on here that sometimes a snake will just stay aggresive forever, does this happen a lot? Any advice on how to make him like me? Help!
 
While a very few don't, most snakes will chill out eventually. Give him time. You might want to just leave him totally alone for a while, like a week or more. Let him see you looking at him, and get used to your mug.

He's just terrified. After eating, they're even more vulnerable, so he's that much more terrified. He'll figure out that you're not going to eat him eventually.

Maybe try showing him that you're not a snake eater by munching a pinky along side him?:sidestep:

Seriously... 5 months old is still young. Time.
 
mabe try letting him smell your bare hand and not pick him up do that some let him get used to the smell of your hand then try picking him up without mitten mabe mitten scares him just a thought and i dont know if snakes can sense if your scared are not but other animals will and take avantage of it good luck ..
 
Hello, All baby corns are skittish, tail rattlers, strike posers.
About 99.9% of them outgrow this and this growing out period differs from individual to individual.
My corns are big, the smallest being about 1.4 metres long, I feed them in feeding tubs and after feeding take them out with my bare hands to replace them in their vivs'. They dont even flinch when I do this.

Persevere with handling your baby and best of luck.

Most of my snakes are like that when I take them out of their bins from feeding. He's behaving normally, there. Just carry the whole bin to his viv and slide him out if you're afraid to pick him up at that time.

You also need to remember that if you put him down right after he bites your or don't handle him when he gets aggressive you are only teaching him that that is a great way to avoid being handled. When my hatchling bites me he just gets held longer haha. I am in the San Diego area if you need any help I am not sure where in cali you are located.
 
Yes Snakes can sense fear and they feed off of your vibrations. Try to always be in an up-beat and happy mood. I know it sounds silly but alittle baby talk can go a long way too. Just to let them know that your there what your doing and that it's going to be ok. Just remember when your going to be handling your snake think happy thoughts. Sometimes music helps too you just have to find out what vibrations they like. Sometimes this will soothe them also. Good luck
 
I agree that it will probably take time to work him out of being so skittish. The more you handle him, the more he'll improve- but you also have to remember not to handle them too often. Once a day or every other day (given the standard 48 hrs after feeding, etc) is better for them than multiple times a day. Try being as calm with him as possible, and don't back away at the prospect of being bitten. Actually, if he gets into strike position, it's even more insentive to go ahead and pick him, to show that your not afraid and that biting won't do anything (even if it actually does). Besides, corns don't have hard bites, so there's nothing to really be afraid of except rapid movement. ;)

Aww! I wasted so much money on frozen mice when I could have just blasted some good-old-fashioned death metal to feed my snake! :crazy02:

Yes I am so aware I'm a smart-ass.

I've been lucky enough to not have any problems with biters but as far as the snake avoiding your hand when you reach in to grab him, all my snakes do that-- or try to bail out of the cage. Once they realize they aren't about to be eaten they will wrap around my fingers/hand but I wouldn't worry about the snake not hopping into your hand when you go to grab him. (Though I know some of the people here have super nifty snakes who will in fact climb into a hand. Lucky SOB's.)
