my snake is missing and I can't sleep. Help

So I come home Monday and check to make sure my snake is comfy in his cage. He's fine. I cook dinner. I thaw out a pinkie for him, and he's gone. I was pretty hysterical so I sort of just looked under, ontop, and inside of everything I could find. Yesterday I was much more methodical and went room to room with a mirror and flashlight. I've set up three hide boxes with pinkies, put flour in between every door, stuck green painters tape around the room, and left plenty of water out. This morning nothing was disturbed. Nothing. I plan on asking a pet store for dirty mouse cage substrate and setting up a few more traps that will hopefully be more inticing. My corn is still young (a bit under 2 feet) so I'm not sure if the plastic bag thing is worth the effort. I'm out of ideas now. I'm completely stressed out and haven't been sleeping well since I keep waking up terrified that he crawled under my mattress and I'm smushing him while I sleep.

Is there anything else I could try? How long should I keep the same dead pinkie in a trap? Should I leave a trap outside? Has anyone tried spot-lighting outside for lost corns at night? How long should I leave out the traps in my house...1 week... 2 weeks...1 month? Is there a time after which I can just assume he made it safely outside and isn't dying of thirst somewhere in my house? Also the tape I used just seemed like green masking tape that was low adhesive. It doesn't seem sticky enough to catch anything. Assuming it is sticky enough, is this trap potentially dangerous if he freaks out and gets too tangled up in the tape? If that's the case should I set my alarm (assuming I ever get to sleep) every few hours to check them? What about temperature of my house. Should I lower the temp. so he seaks out heat or is it better just to turn off the heater so he's not attracted to the vents. Aack! Someone help me! This is driving me nuts!

Sounds like you've covered your bases. I would check underneath your tank, up above curtains and in the hangers for blinds if you have them. There are a huge number of posts on lost snakes, and the various areas people have found them. Try using the search and check them out.

I came back 2 hours later in my classroom and found one of my corns missing....I found it eventually in a box that was located under the window, curled up in the bottom!!!

LOST CORNS

Corns are the Hudini's of the snake world, i too have several small corns under 2 ft in length, mine have got out a couple of times through gaps of about 5mm! I have always found mine behind the skirting boards, mine also never left the area around the tank and that is where i put the pinkies out for them. I rub the pinkies all over the skirting board and around that area, i also slit the skull with a razor to make them more potant for the corn and then keep an eye on the pinkies and look for any movement, the majority of the time the pinkies have gone by the morning and as the corn will have just eaten often they do not move away from that area making them easier to find. I also always leave the heating on if there is a loose corn around as i live in quite a cold house and last time i found one that got out he was very very cold.
Good luck finding him

still missing

Thanks for the encouragement. I haven't found him yet but I'm still hopeful despite the fact that I live in the basement apartment of a 1929 house so there are about a billion ways for a snake to get outside or in the walls. I've got two things going for me right now 1) there's a cold spell so my house is considerably warmer than outside 2) the traps have caused my apartment to smell intensely of mouse droppings/dead mouse and I know the guy is hungry.

My place feels so empty with out him. Its strange how attached I've become.....

I use a carpet (really more of a thick, coarse felt) substrate in my tank. And my snakes (I have two) are each 1' long.
One day I bought lid clamps... Just in case.
Next day I came home from work, pulled up the Spanish moss, and did a count... One missing snake! I freaked out, pulled everything out of the cage, tore through the moss looking for some sign. Nothing.
So I freaked out some more.
Then I pulled up the carpet, and there she was. Somehow snuck under the carpet, just happily coiled up.

I hope you find your friend.

squigg, please update us

Did you find your snake.... it's been 3 months.....please update us......

Seriously...update needed. I have wondered about this for days. I hope your snake is ok and oyu found him/her!

yeah, I'm sorry about the lack of update...I was really upset, moderately depressed, and in no mood to communicate after a month of intense searching and a persistant dead mouse smell in my apartment. I still haven't found my snake despite what I consider a very noble effort on my part and the part of my friends who formed a search party and looked in literally every corner of my apartment. I'm convinced Mr. Squiggles made it safely outside and is living a very happy life. (Yeah I know, with that name I probably would have run away too, but it started out as a joke and somehow stuck) Two weeks ago I purchased a new snake along with strong clamps for the cage lid and we're getting along very well.

Thanks everyone for your help and concern.
