he seems to be hiding most or all of the day. that is when i usually leave his reptile light on. should i change that to having the light off during the day and leave it on overnight when he appears to be most active? i mean when the heck is he supposed to bask? i thought they all did and he seems to hide alot. thanx jeromy

Cornsnakes don't really bask. They regulate their body temperature as needed. It is possible that the lamp is too warm, and the snake is seeking a cooler place. What are the temperatures in your snake’s enclosure? Of course it is also possible that it is doing what comes naturally. Truth be told, snakes are instinctively most active between dusk and dawn. That is the way they are programmed.

See if you can find a copy of The Cornsnake Manual by Kathy Love. It will answer most every question that you have.

My heatlamp is on a timer to go off at night. When it goes off, my snake comes out and cruises her viv. She likes to lay on the basking rock at that time also. I think she feels more secure in the dark, yet it's still nice and warm in the viv. My house temps get down to 60 at night, so she ends up going back in her cave when the viv temps cool and lies over the heat mat.

thanks for the replies

ok thats cool on both ends. i guess i do notice him coming out more when all/most of the lights are turned off prior to bed. the temps in his cage are 79ish at the warm end and usually between 73 and 75ish at the cool end. it is a 55 gallon tank though. i just love my little Bailey. when he kisses my nose, it makes it tingle. thank you again. jeromy

mine hides too...

i just got him on saturday and i'm guessing part of it has to do with his unfamiliar surroundings. i got a baby albino snow corn. he seems very inactive almost all the time, he hides out under his water bowl. he becomes very alert and moves about when i handle him. he shed last night...and spent all day under his bowl. i handled him for a while today and then fed him. i just walked into my room to see what he was doing and he's very active right now...trying to make an escape. i keep the temparature in his terrarium at around 74 or so...and i have both a day light and night light...does he need one for night or no? my room tends to get cold so i thought it was necessary.

My house is very cool at night, but my snake's hider cave has an UTH in half of it, so she can pick a spot that suits her while she's in there.
