My store makes me angry....

Outcast

ATPSS
So, the other day a rat got out, it was one of the only two dumbo's we have and I love both of them. Well I was told that since she was had escaped and been caught, that when Pest Control comes to pick up the dead fish that we have to store in the freezer, that they are going to take her and kill her... It makes me upset, because I am already pushing my limits with my wife, when it comes to animals, and I would love to save her life... She is a really cool rat... But, the store manager doesn't want to "take a chance" that she will bite the person and they will sue or something...

It just makes me upset that they are going to send a perfectly fine rat, that would be a great pet for someone, off to die. For no real reason, other than the store manager is afraid...

why dont they put her in quarantine for a while to make sure she doesnt have something...I mean would they be LOSING profit buy killing her?

What does the fact that she escaped have to do with her biting?
I say take her home!
And take her buddy too, they are social and need friends.

I love rats as pets probably more than dogs or cats, and believe me, I love dogs and cats......

The store manager is afraid of the possibility of her having rabies or something.... Though, she was caught a week and a half ago, and has been in quarantine since then. If she had the disease, she probably would have exhibited it by now, right?

I just wish I had the right size cage for both of them. I would take them just to make sure they do not end up someones snake food. They are very cool animals, and I would love to get them, I just do not have the right stuff for them, or the money to get it... I mean, I have a water bottle, and feed bowl, from when I was going to get one a long time ago... I do not get rid of anything animal related if I can help it.

I know as a fact that there has never ever been an incident of a rat passing rabies to a human. Anything big enough to give a rat rabies would most likely end up killing it. Rabies is NO reason to kill a rat.
She has no disease that anyone has to be afraid of. She's just a domestic ratty.

My point Exactly!!!

I have tried pointing that out to the other employee's, including the other managers. No one wants to go up against the store manager though. It is very frustrating.

That is just wrong. It's never easy working under someone and being forced to do what they say, even though they're wrong and you know you're right. Its all part of the corporate hole our society has dug for itself. The best thing to do is study hard and get a job where you will be appreciated, or become your own boss.

I just put in a application for kennel keeper at the local humane society, that's as hard up as someone who wants to work with animals can get.

I'm sorry about the rat. People can be really stupid.

well if they are going to KILL it then maby just ask them if you can have it (without paying since they plan on killing it) atleast till you can find a home for it if you feel that strongly about it. Sounds to me like the pet store manager doesnt care much about the animals, atleast to me it sounds that way.

It doesn't sound like the cost of the rat is the issue, so much as Aaron's wife's patience....regarding him taking it home. Aaron, surely it couldn't be hard to find the rat a forever home....from a short amnesty at your house.

Although it sounds like if the manager doesn't understand rabies, and wants to remain comfortably 'free of blame'....he probably won't let you, any more than anyone else, take the animal home.
I wonder is this a hard policy for this situation? The handing over to Pest Control part.

Have you even asked him if he'll just let you take it home (or buy it)? That way the store could say it died when Animal Control comes to pick it up (heck, if you guys provide f/t animals for sale, you could just point at a rat in the freezer and say, "that's the one!"), and the animal's life is spared. They could even make a profit if you purchased it, and all would be well with the world....

Just keep it for the rabies incubation period...

"Comparing rats with other species, raccoons (the most common wild animal carrier of rabies, Krebs et al. 1999, 2002) have an incubation period of about five weeks (estimated by Tinline et al. 2002). Vampire bats survived an average of 12 days after experimental infection (Setien et al. 1998). Ferrets incubate rabies for 22-33 days (Niezgoda et al. 1997a, b. 1998). Dogs incubate rabies from one week to several months (Fekadu 1993, Fekadu and Shaddock 1984). Humans have a rabies incubation period of 1-3 months..."

Sounds like you have a rather uneducated store manager. In my store we'd just isolate the rat for a few days, if even that. Its really hard to make someone like that see the truth when they've got a fear of being sued. Its an unfortunate quality in today's society.

If there is a small animal rescues\ (specializing in rats, guinea pigs, etc) near you or in the state call them and see if they can do anything.

Unfortunately, I am not working with the store manager any time within the next week. She is taking leave for the rest of the week, and I am not sure when Animal Control will show up to pick the animals up, if they haven't already...
Yes, my store manager does not know as much as she thinks she does, when it comes to animals... I have tried explaining the dangers of her keeping her 3 corn snakes together, but she will not listen... I mean, she just recently lost her big male, sold off her two big females, and still insists that her sub adults are just fine...

Oh, and she refuses to go onto snake forums to get information about the animals she owns....

I have even caught her telling a customer some wrong information about the Leo's and Fat Tails... I mean, I do not know much about them, but I will at least turn around and grab one of the husbandry guides that we have for sale, in order to better answer the questions of the customer.

But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. One of the new managers is sick and tired of all of these "regulations" that appear out of no where, and every chance she gets, she reads through everything she can, in order to see what is real and what is not.

Also, when we get live animals in, they come in these pretty heavy duty plastic carriers, I will post a picture, but I do not see why I cannot clean it out real good and put a rat or two in it... Other than the rat chewing through it...
I originally started to collect these things for my snake rack, though I think the bottom may be too thick for the heat to get through...
I will have to get a picture of it when I get home to show everyone. I plan on getting as many of them as I can. They will make great transportation crates, if not pens.

I was also told by the local pet store to "stay away from forums, to many opinions not enough facts", which was funny because I was correcting them on facts about corn snakes. WHen they asked me where I learned that all from i just laphed and said "www.cornsakes.com, its a forum full of breeders and people who know what they are talking about" they kinda shut up.
