Gig 'Em Ags!! Whoop!!
Hey ya'll,

I am going to enter my first photo contest and I took these last weekend, but I'm not sure if I like them or not. I'm going to keep taking pictures but I just wanted to see which ones ya'll liked as an initial judging :) I can submit some in the lizard and snake categories and I'm working on humans & herps. Here are the challengers... Hope ya'll have some good feedback for me...positive or negative...all comments are welcomed :)

I voted for 2 since it's such a nice shot, and 5 because I think it will do well because it's so cute.

I am also voting for 2 and 5.
Two is a great macro with nice lighting, color and composition. Tongue out is a bonus.
And 5 is just a really cute gecko shot - again you have good lighting, color and composition. I think my only nitpick is I would like the tail to be in focus with the rest of the body.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate all of your input and especially you arpeggio. I've always been fascinated by your photography with snakes and was really hope you'd chime in for me :D I'll crank up my f stop a little more next time and get the tail in focus on the geckos. I was doing a little more portrait shooting and was around 8 for the most part. Usually I try to shoot at about 16 or even 22 if I'm going for full body shots.

The nice thing is I get 3 in each categorie and I think I'm only going to do the amatuer competition which I think the winner in each categorie gets a ribbon and a t-shirt or something...no high stake lol. But thank you all again and as it gets closer I'm sure I'll be trying to take more and more pics :)

Congrats on entering your first contest! Hubby (Bill) is the coordinator of all of the NARBC photo contests (he is not one of the judges though - he just does everything except judge), so I asked him to take a quick look. He didn't want to pick specific photos, but said your photos look similar to the quality of what they usually get in the contests and you have a good chance of doing well. He said that your composition looks good, and the photos look good overall.

I have seen some of the photos in some of the contests and I can tell you that there are often many very nice close-up photos of particular animals. What often wins is something out of the ordinary, something "cute", or an animal doing something, like eating, running, striking, frogs calling, licking eyeballs (gecko), open mouth, etc, etc. You might want to experiment with some various action and / or "cute" photos.

Anyone else who is coming to the next NARBC show in Tx, be sure to enter into the photo contest too! You can read the contest rules on their website here: (click the "contest rules" text - it is a PDF file):

Good luck!

Thank you very much Kathy. I've been a huge fan of your husbands photography for years and really want to go on one of his trips to Madagascar when I have the money and time. I am really looking forward to going to the contest and seeing what a "professional" quality photo looks like and is composed. When I posted this I was hoping for feedback but never expected to have you or Bill look at it so that was a really nice surprise :) I appreciate everyone's feedback and hope that others will enter the contest too :)

I voted 3 & 5 (though I'm also partial to #4 ;)). But they all look great Payton. I take it you're coming up for NARBC? I'll be there, we'll have to make sure and meet of there sometime.

Yeah I'm definitly plannin on being there and boo is getting big. Can't wait to breed her next year. She's 200+ now and growing like a weed. She's finally hit that spurt over this winter with no change in feeding schedule. I'm gonna try and get the gf to come up to the show with me, but we'll definitly have to talk when it gets closer and make some plans to meet up at the show.

Very nice!

Those are all very nice photo's Pruddock! I was instantly drawn to 3 and 6 myself! Good luck and have fun at the contest!

Pic 3

I liked picture three, but I have entered that contest before and my pictures were crap compared to the rest and the ones that did win would have made the most talented professional photographers best work look like crap! Good luck!!!

Now I'm not so sure I want to enter lol :(

Sorry

Well, I hope you enter a picture,I thought that the pictures would have been judged more by the animal in the picture and not so much on the quality and pose. The contest is pretty cool as all the entries are placed on a table for everyone to view.I think that you should keep in mind that the quality and creativity of the shot ,plays a big part. Your photos are of much higher quality then the one I entered. If you catch one of your animals doing something different such as yawning or maybe licking its eyeball and get a good closeup of it you would stand a good chance. I just kinda felt bad when I saw all the other photos and realized at that point I didnt have a chance. There was another contest before that was for the rarest morph animal which I thought was very cool there were alot of animals that entered it .Which was morphs that I had never seen before and know that the people that produced these morphs spent alot of time and energy producing these animals, the snake that won that contest was a two headed California Kingsnake! To me that was a Big disapointment! Anyway enter a picture and have fun!
