Need a good breeders help!!!
Most of the care sheets ive read about breeding corn snakes have been very helpful. But some conterdict each other and i have a few questions.

1. Most say to keep the cage at 55-65 dergrees F. Is this true? I have a colder room in my house that i can use but i dont know the exact temp. What do u guys do to bring down the temp in that room?

2. Most say to remove the eggs and put them in an incubator, which sounds right. But one or two sites emphized NOT TO TOUCH THE EGGS. Well then how do I remove them to an incubator?

3. All sites i have visited give a rather large age range on when corn snakes become sexually active. Are there any signs the snake will give to let me know it is sexually active?

4. This has nothin to do with breeding but i still would like to know. When you guys list your snakes to the left of them you put 1.0 or 0.1. What does this mean?

Thank you for all of your help. Me and my baby corns will greatly appriciate and benifit from it!!!

hiya T.

First off, with the temp, are you talking for breeding or brumation (cooling down period).

If its for breeding then its far too low, you should be looking at about 80-85 in the warm side.

Removing the eggs is ok if you do not turn them, keep them exactly as they are.

Age is not realy the issue, as long as the female is at ;east 30" and a good weight, the male can be a little smaller.

I think the numbers are:-first number=male, second=female and third =unsexed if i'm wrong on that someone will correct me.

Hope this helps..................................STEVE

Yes, brumation is when you stop feeding your snakes, gradually cool them down for 2-3 months, then gradually warm them and resume feeding. This stimulates them to breed.

55-65 are ok for brumating (cooling), occassional drops below this even into the 30s won't hurt your snakes. I keep my breeders in a shed so when it gets cool outside I just turn down their heater.

I don't use an incubator, I've heard to many stories of them malfunctioning and cooking eggs. I just remove the eggs from the nest box (keeping them in the same position they where laid) and put them in a box of moist vermiculite ( burying them 3/4 deep in the vermiculite). Then I put the box on a shelf in a warm spot (about 82 degrees F.).

Cornsnakes become sexually mature at about 32 inches of length. My opinion is that it's not a good idea to breed a female that is less than 36 inches.

1.0 one male, 0.1 one female, 0.0.1 unsexed.

breeding--brumation

Your temps are correct. 55-65, sometimes even lower are fine for brumating corns and other colubrids. In fact some colubrids do a little better at even lower temps. Corns should be brumated for 2-3 months. I put mine under for about 2 1/2 months and they do fine. Yous hould ensure the snake's cage is kept clean, supplied with fresh water at all times, and when you have reached the optimal temp (60-55) all lights should be cut off.
