Hey, just got my corn snake last thursday, its about 4-5months old, the first day i got him he was very active exploring his new surroundings, since then i havent seen him at all, only time i see him is when i go looking for him lifting his moss up etc.. is this normal, its feeding time 2morro, wat will i do if he dosnt come out.

After an initial check for escape routes (!), all new arrivals will go to ground for a few days while they get used to the smells/sounds of their new home.

After that, you need to bear in mind that Corns aren't active during the day. Your best bet for seeing them out and about, is in the evening.

You shouldn't feed new arrivals for a week, as they are usually stressed and this can risk a regurge.

If he doesn't come out to be fed, you have to go and fetch him. They don't know when it's feeding time - just when they're hungry (and beware that this will seem like "most of the time"!).

And try not to flinch too much if it strikes at you. This is normal for young corns especially when in a new home. They calm down pretty fast too.

Congrats and good luck!

Any chance on pics in the future?

ok cool thanx for the quick reply, and another thing, my night time temp drops to around 65F i always turn my 60w bulb on all day then when i go to bed turn it off at night its that an ok temp for nite time? during the day ita round 80-83F

With temperatures below 70 you'll be risking a regurge or respiratory infections. But as discussed before, with a stick-on dial your temperatures could be way off.

And Walmart sells probe therms in the kitchen section for $13 and change if you can't find them anywhere else.

So far online for $6 seems to be the best deal going.

It's normal, you still got a baby there. Think about a normal clutch in the wild, not many make it to adulthood due to predators. Everything eats them. Baby corns are just shy out of instinct. All of mine that I have gotten as babies hide almost constantly, except for the ones in bins now (they have enough privacy that they only get in the hide if there is alot of activity in the room.) As your corn gets older, it will come out more and more.

Cool, ok so i need to get myself a proper digital thermo and a thermostat asap, im from the UK any ideas on reasonably priced ones? thanx alot for the help guys, im newbie to corn snakes.

Hey, yea stick on dial is the thermo i use, gonna purchase a digi one asap.

P.s good news he came out 2nite for a while i was playing with him for 20mins or so, feeding day 2morro, hope all goes well. will keep u updated..

Go to Wal-mart in their hardware section where the thermometers are. Usually on a wire rack that hangs on the side of an endcap. They have a white digital therm w/humidity that sells for about 7 bucks. Doesn't have a probe, but I just stick them in the tank where I went them. they do have a clip on the back and a magnet on that. Some of the cages I got little magnets and put the magnet on the outside of the tank to hold the thermometer in place. But if snake is bigger and magnet isn't strong enough you risk having the snake injured when it knocks it off the tank or at the very least you are picking up magnets every morning, lol.

With the probe is better if you can get it. I was tearing my hair out wondering why the tubs on my new rack would only get maximum reading of 81 over the heat cable, then realised I'd selected 'in' instead of 'out on the digital thermometer, so I was getting the ambient temp in the tub instead.

Oh thanks for the advice, but i do like this one for 28$ that Say at Petsmart the has 2 probes for each side of tanks and the humidity so i might just spend the money on behalf of keeping a healthy snake and not having to buy strong magnets lol =)

Considering your snake could live for 20 years, the initial outlay is really nothing! (My sister's neighbour has a corn who'll be 23 this year!)

whoah that's crazy!!! lol I am just ordering my baby crimson corn from Kathy Love so I hope he is a good sanke, but she said that when she went out there to check on him that he was a little bit nippy, and I was also looking at her female normal het amel stripe and she said it would be the better choice because it didn't bite because I'm just a beginner...so what do you think i should do? the crimson?http://www.cornutopia.com/Corn Utopia on the Web/Image Stockpile - New 2008/JPEG/- 024.jpg or the normal?http://www.cornutopia.com/Corn Utopia on the Web/Image Stockpile - New 2008/JPEG/- 016.jpg
