BabyMowgli

just one more....
Well I am the proud new mother of a 10 week old doberman pinscher! A guy gave her to me last night for next to nothing!

What I was wondering was if anyone else has dobies. could you post a picture or two? She is too old to get her ears cropped and I am not sure how I feel about that yet. I always said I would only have a doberman if it's ears were cropped. they look so much better. I am trying to get used to hers and I think they will grow on me. it might just take a while!

anyway, I will post pictures of her after class. thanks!

I love dobies! I have never owned one, but that is what I would want if I had to get a dog. I borrowed one from a friend when I was living in a super-scary neighborhood- she guarded me the whole time I lived there- it was wonderful. I love how alert and athletic and smart they are, but not hyper- they can nap with the best. They are "cute" with natural ears. I prefer the cropped look, but I'm sure a natural one could be menacing enough if needed. What color is she??

I have a dobie, Tank. We got him from my cousin who couldnt keep him anymore and now he's basically my dog and I love him dearly.

heh, sorry if thats overload, but what can I say? He's the most awesome dog ever.

sorry for the doubloe post and i have to get to classreally soon, but I jsut noticed the ear comment. I was never plannign on getting a dobie before tank so I didnt knwo about the ear orientation, but I love tank's the way they are and am very glad they weren't cropped. Cropped looks good and intimidating, but dobermans are so docile that it just end up being a false front. Tank is so huge that people fear him with his goofy floppy ears anyways.

Come to think of it, my rent-a-dobie, Jessie, had natural ears and she was _terrifying_ to see at the door of the house when you knocked...

Congrats on your new pup! They are super smart but take a firm hand in training. You can't let them get away with anything.

Nanci - LOL not hyper! You are funny! If your rent-a-pooch wasn't hyper then you got lucky. I know quite a few people with dobies and many of them work with rescue dobies as well. Most of them are extremely hyper. However the better trained a dobie is the less hyper it will become.

I define hyper as Border Collie! Maybe I see "alert" and "athletic" the way you see "hyper." By hyper I mean they don't turn off EVER! I am always drooling over the rescue dobie pages, but- it's like when your kids are finally gone- you're free! Hard to go back to a life with a needy (as opposed to a snake) animal.

Very cool. I can't wait to see some pics. I dated this girl for a while who had a pair of dobermans. They were some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met (though they were dumb as a brick). It would be funny when we'd take them for walks in the park or something; people would just run away because they looked menacing and people have this stereotypical attitude of "Dobermans are mean dogs".

Yeah people run away when they see my big great dane mix.. I love it! The only ones that don't run away are the kids. They love petting my dog ... he is so spoiled. :p

you know you can still get his ears cut, it just will take longer to heal but the vet can still do them.I had a pit that was not cut as a pup and some people told me the same thing, but a friend of mine did cuts on the side and ba da bing ba da boom it was done with no problems:):smash:.

Congrats!
I love Dobies. I have not had the pleasure of having one yet but I currently have two Whippets and I find their personalities similar (coming from the shared Greyhound ancestry).

As for the ears, I prefer natrual ears mainly because I have worked as a vet tech and have seen what a lot of puppies go through during the healing process.
If you want to have the ears done, please look for a vet that specializes in Doberman cropping. I have seen too many Dobies with bad crops i.e. Pit Bull ears.

What a handsome boy. No need to appologize. :spinner:
Many of my dog training friends have Dobies and I really love their personalities.

I understand the aesthetics of cropping, yes, it does look good, but please don't do it. In Europe they do not allow ear cropping on this breed in the show ring. If the ears don't naturally stand up, they aren't meant to. Just my two cents.

I will try and post pics soon. she is black and tan. I called around to a few vets today and I just don't have the money right now. she will have to have natural ears. oh well. I will try and get used to it! lol.

Actually cropping isn't about aesthetics (or isn't supposed to be). Cropping serves 2 purposes: 1) prevents other dogs from biting and hanging on to the ear. 2) Most dogs that have there ears cropped are protection dogs...this prevents people from hanging onto the ears. Who would hang on to a dogs ears? Simple, If you are being attacked by a dog you can shove your thumbs into the back sides of his jaw (no teeth there) and hang onto his ears to keep from getting bit. Yeah sticking your fingers into an attacking dogs mouth is scary but better that than your face eaten off.

Aww who wouldn't want a cute friendly, clever, man eattting puppy? lol

lol...In all honesty...I am a strong believer in the thought that a dog will only react to the way it is treated and trained..If it has a good upbringing and is well trained then no dog has to be nasty or mean..If a dog is raised as a gaurd dog and is encouraged for it's aggressive behavior then you will get what you ask for...and then some people end up giving the dog to the shelter claiming it's vicious for no reason or they don't know why it bites :shrugs:. I dunno...but anyway...Congrats on the new doggie! Can't wait to see pics of him :)

While that does make sense, I don't see many other breeds with cropped ears. Rotties don't have them and they would be in the same field as a protection dog. If I was given a Dobie with its ears already done, I wouldn't have an issue with it, but I wouldn't do it to a dog. I actually like them with long tails, too. With floppy ears and a long tail they almost look like black and tan coonhounds.

In any case, congrats on your new puppy, Mowgli!

Maize... training a dog for protection is not encouraging aggressive behavior. Dogs that have been PROPERLY trained are actually far less likely to bite without good reason than your average dog. Protection dogs are trained when, how, and where to bite and in what type of situation.

Dionythicus...Most cropped ear dogs are from Germany. The rottie was a roman cattle dog. Also the natural ears of the rottie are relatively short and with the massive head of the rottie it would be very difficult to get a hold of his ears in their natural form. I am not saying everyone should get their dogs ears cropped. I am just telling you that it was originally designed for the safety of the dog.
