New additions and a new member of the Bite Club!

Tavia

Elemental Exotics
A local guy was getting married and needed to get rid of these two BRBs, so we went to look at them earlier today and decided to take them. They weren't in the best setups but look in very good condition except that the female has at least one set of retained eye caps. Will have to see what we can do about them.

The guy had let us know that the female, who has been named Kaylee, was a little bit feisty and had struck at him once and that he did use gloves with her.
We got her out to get squared away in her new temp home, took some pictures, and then my husband took her and started to put her away when she decided to rather spectacularly induct him into the Bite Club, she did not want to let go either! Got some crappy pictures of the bite happening. So glad she didn't bite me!
Didn't get any pictures of the male, Simon yet.

And her poor eyes.

Beautiful rainbow. I myself could never brave owning a boa, especially with a toddler running around, but I do have a thing for these ones. I love the pattern on the top of her head in the last pic.

How bad did the bite hurt out of curiosity?

Not as bad as I had expected honestly. As I know nothing about these things, how many teeth does a boa like this have? Cleaned up I'd imagine it's just a couple of nasty punctures, right?

Hopefully she tames down for you guys, probably just trying to get used to the new surrounding and situation.

It hurt quite a bit actually. My husband never swears and he dropped a few F bombs during this episode. She twisted a good bit and it took about three minutes to get her off.

Damn... yeah, remind me to stick to corns, baby balls and rosys haha. Don't think I'm adventuring into the boa market anytime soon.

Guess I'm underestimating the power of the beast here. Crazy...

It didn't leave much damage though, no. It should heal up fast. Yeah, she's very powerful! Quite startling since she is now the biggest snake we have, in terms of girth and power anyway. Two of my corns are probably longer.

Congrats on getting BRB's, great snakes. Looks like the female is quite feisty. Congrats to your husband joining the bite club. ^^

We actually have one little female that we've had for about ten months already but she was only 2 1/2 months old or so when we got her, so she's still quite small. She was very calm when we got her but did go through a snappish phase a few months ago that seems, knock on wood, to be over with now.

Hopefully this girl will chill out. I think getting those eye caps off ought to improve her personality a lot. Fortunately and unfortunately, I believe this was more in the nature of a feeding bite than a mean or defensive bite. She did try to coil his arm, which he was able to keep her from doing, and he watched her bite and knew it was going to happen for a few seconds before it did. She just calmly moved her head in close, looked at it like, "what's this?" and opened her mouth and clamped on.
In my experience scared or defensive biting is a quick strike and release and feeding bites generally last longer, depending on how soon the snake realizes it can't eat you.

Finally got a good look at Simon and he has the high white sides I like.

They threw in a 55 gallon old fish tank that had had a background made for it and the background had a hidey hole just big enough for him to wedge himself into and someone not be able to get him out. We don't have big enough cages presently for them right now, though we have everything else they need, and had thought we'd keep one in the 55 gallon tank and go buy a nice big tub for the other tomorrow when the stores are open but the more we looked at this tank, the more displeased we are with it. So I'll be getting them both proper sized tubs tomorrow.
Simon finally came out of his hiding place just a few minutes ago and we scooped him up and put him in a tote like Kaylee.
Was finally able to get a look at all of him and he looks good. Didn't get pictures though as its past our bedtime. Will get some tomorrow when we get them situated properly.

They sure are some beautiful snakes. Congrats on them and you will have to post some updated pictures as soon as that girl is able to get her retained eye cap off.

Yeah, I'm not sure what more to do for the eye caps. I'd actually told my husband to hold her a bit longer while I ran to get some vegetable oil and a Q-tip to put some on them but when I got back, he was swearing and she was latched on to him.
So then we had the drama of getting her off and I didn't get any on them and have to admit that I'm not too in a hurry to try now!

They were on the completely wrong type of substrate, so I'm hoping just changing it to something proper and keeping the humidity high and waiting to see if they come off with her next shed will be sufficient.
Anyone have any good, not too invasive suggestions on getting them off?

Talk to Nanci. I think it was Vaseline intensive care that her vet recommend and it worked like a charm. She could tell you more about how often she applied it and what else she might have done.

Kaylee shed this morning and the eye caps came off, yay! Here she is all freshly shed.

One day I will own a rainbow. Want to make the natural progression of dealing with easier to manage snakes first that don't have so many requirements as far as care goes. I don't have enough time for that much snake labor right now. My goal is 5 - 6 years.

These snakes are probably one of the most beautiful creatures out there in my mind. So much so, that my tattoo I am getting for my 30th in October is going to showcase one wrapped around a PRS guitar.

Amazing animal you have there Tavia. Glad the eye caps came off. Maybe now that he can see better, he will calm for you too. Is it officially your snake now or are you just keeping it until you find a home? If my memory serves right, someone gave it to you, correct?

Yeah, they are officially ours. Or more specifically, mostly my husband's. I've always loved the looks of the BRBs but probably wouldn't have gotten any on my own because they are a bit bigger and more powerful of a snake than I'd be completely comfortable with. But my husband held one at an Expo and fell in love. Their size doesn't intimidate him. She's not really that big but after she bit him, we've agreed that neither of us will handle her without the other in the house. One person could handle her but if she decides to be a pain, one person would definitely have a handful!

Yeah, power like that isn't something I'd trust myself solo with. Always best to have two around for a larger snake anyway. That's why I feel I'm not ready yet. Want to understand snake ownership much more and get more responsible with it before I get that in depth. You guys are lucky though. It's such an amazing animal to show off and have as a centerpiece of a room or as a display piece. Just awe inspiring.
