New chat room test site I set up

I just installed an evaluation copy of some CHAT software to try out that I am thinking about buying. I want to put this capability here for everyone to use, if they want to. Now this is not cheap software, so I want this evaluation copy to be wrung out sufficiently for two reasons:

(1) To see how well it runs on my new server (the evaluation version is limited to a single room and 30 simultaneous users).

(2) To see whether enough people will use this to make it worthwhile for me to fork out the funds for it.

So if you all don't mind, how about giving it a whirl and tell me what you think of it. To be honest, I don't use chat boards like this, so I don't know what sort of functionality I should be aiming for. So I am definitely open to suggestions on this.

Anyway, here's the link to it:

HerpChat

I like it Rich. Didn't chat with anyone. I was the only one in the room. I like the features and it appears to be easy to use. I hope it works out.

Looks interesting. I don't usually use chat rooms but this might be fun. I'll have to come back when I have more time and check out how to use everything:cool:

Hey Rich, I figured out you have to go to settings and click on "auto pop up private messages" that is why I didn't get the box at first. It is fun playing with something new!

Carol,

Yeah, I found that checkbox as well. I kind of like that chat thingy. I can see where it would suck away a lot of hours in a day, though. Probably would be great if you are down with the flu to curl up with a laptop and spend hours chatting there with people. It's a lot more 'real time' than the forums are. I wish there was a way to check to see how many people actually frequent it though. Maybe that comes with the real package...

If I buy the package, I'll be able to set it up so that there can be any number of separate rooms off of the main 'lobby'. So I can set up separate rooms for cornsnakes, pythons, leopard geckos, etc. that people can log into and talk about things specific to their interests. I thought I saw a 'save' button there as well so people could actually save their own transcript of the entire conversation.

I took a look at some other chat packages, but none of them seemed to have the inherent features this one does. Sigh... there goes more $$$ out of my pocket......

But I think it will be money spent on something that will be fun, so that's not so bad, I guess.

Love It!

Yes Rich, I really Like it! It would be nice to come here and and share info and hang out after a long day. With all the snow and 10* temps, this is the perfect way to spend an evening! Hope it works out...

cool

looks great.

will there be a regular chat night???

happy herping herpers......................STEVE

Could be alot of fun, if we could set up a specific time(s) and
day(s) that we could "meet". It was sort of dull when I checked, and the couple of people there left almost as soon as I got on.

Well, you know this site does have a calendar (click on the button up in the upper righthand section of the screen), and anyone can post public events on it (at least I think they can). Anyone whom has an interest to do so is perfectly welcome to set up a date and time for a chat meeting. If it looks like enough people have an interest in doing this I could open up a forum specifically for notices of chat meetings as well. It may take a while to get people used to checking the calendar.

You all can just let me know how you want me to handle this.

Thanks.

I never really took notice of the calendar button before. Sounds, and looks like a good place to set up chat dates. Now if we can just figure out the time with all the different zones. I know I saw a time located somewhere on this forum, but I have to check out how it matches my time, and then we need to make sure the calendar event states specifically what time in what zone it is.

OK, the post I just made was logged at 6:10 PM. My watch says it is 11:10 PM (past my bedtime since I work tomorrow). Therefore, I am 5 hours ahead of this forum. (We have that many time zones in this country? I thought it was only 4...eastern, central, mountain and pacific. I was never good at geography, and never traveled further west than Louisiana, just 1 hour behind.) OK, I'm sure Alaska and Hawaii are in yet another zone, but I don't think this site is based there.

Bedtime!

Hmm, Susan I think you may have set your time zone wrong in the user options of the forum. It says 11:10 pm on your post on my screen, and I'm in the same time zone as you. If I recall correctly, though, the time zones on the forum do not match up correctly with the time it really is... To get it to show the right time, I think I had to tell it I was in London.

Also, I remember some time during the summer I tried to put the Syracuse herp show on the calendar, but I could not post a public event. The event was a "private" event, and only showed on my own calendar. Can we now post public events, RIch?

Calendar?

I've looked all over and can't seem to find the calendar button. Where is it at exactly? I even looked in help and didn't see one listed.

According to the permissions for each group, all registered members should be able to create public events in the calendar.

kenalotia - the calendar can be accessed from the button up in the upper right hand of the screen. Notice the row of buttons up there? It's the third from the left.

And yes, everyone needs to check their profile to make sure that their time offset is correct. You access this through the button in that same area that says 'user cp'.

I have my time set...

on the Central Time Zone (US and Canada) and it always shows up wrong when I post something. Is there another one I am supposed to have it on instead?

I just changed the time settings on the server to GMT -5. The time right now on my local system (Eastern Standard Time) is 1:51pm.
