Hello!

I've been lurking for the past week since finding this wonderful forum. I just wish I would have found it sooner. My son, who is 12, lost his pet Corn Snake "Frederick" last week. Frederick was a great snake and a wonderful member of our family for 5 years. Since my son picked him out when he was 6, I was very involved in his care. Suddenly and with very little warning, Frederick passed on this past Good Friday. His passing has rocked our family, especially my son and I.

I'd like to post a bit about what signs we saw before his passing but I'll post those on the appropriate section. It's important to us all to try to figure out what happened since we purchased another corn snake at yesterdays Westchester reptile Expo. This new snake was not a replacement for Frederick since no snake will ever be able to do that. Such a huge hole was punched into our lives when Frederick died. I felt we needed to try to fill the void and begin the care process all over again as therapy.

Oh, BTW, the new snake is a Black Motley Corn Snake from 2008. He is already eating fuzzies! Once he is secure in his new home, I'll take a few fotos and post them.

Aww, Im sorry to hear about your loss, but you will find this is a great place to get help. Lots of active users are around everyday! :) Welcome.
 
I'm too am sorry to hear about your snake. Sometimes it just happens.

As stated you should find some good advice here to help out if you need it.

Good luck with your new snakes. Just be warn tho...We like picture of corn snakes here so when you get a chance..:wavey:
 
Hello and welcome to theforum from a fellow NJ reptile keeper :) I'm very sorry to hear of your snake passing..I too have lost 2 corns this year myself :(. So I know how devistating A loss like that can be. Congrats on getting a new snake and we look forward to seeing pics of him soon :)!!

What part of NJ are you in??

I'm very sorry to hear about Frederick, it's always hard to lose a pet but I'm
glad to see it didn't put you off to owning another corn they are great snakes.
 
Wow! Thanks for the very warm welcome! I'm from Bergen county & the town I live in is 7 miles from NYC.

Frederick was a great snake! I've owned monitors before & he was a very nice change from the attitude that monitors often have. Frederick never bit or acted aggressive. We handled him often and believe he was happy. Last year we moved him into a new 55 gallon long fish tank and he had plenty of room to move around.

Ya know, I've often been told that reptiles don't have feelings and can't love their owners like dogs do but after having Frederick, I'm not so sure I believe any of those things. He seemed to recognize us from friends and he actually seemed to come out of hiding to assist us with picking him up. We always fed him in a large plastic tub so he never seemed to associate with us picking him up with feeding. During the two bad sheds that he had, I held him in my hands after soaking him and helped him to get all the old skin off. He actually seemed to enjoy my help. He'd wriggle in my hands without moving forward or backward in an attempt to break free of the skin still stuck on him. I miss him, a lot.

Like I already said, we owned him for 5 years so we must have done a lot of things right. I do have a ton of questions so I can do even better this time. When Frederick came into our lives I said to my wife, Frederick will live long enough for our son to take him to college when he goes. Unfortunately, that did not happen.
