New Job!!!

Tyger9791

Animal Care Specialist
I have been offered a full time position at the animal shelter. But I may have to make a small sacrifice to make ends meet for a bit. Going to have to tighten up my budget a bit. The pay is a tad less than I make at my current job. But the long term benefits far outweigh staying at my current job. The health benefits are better, there are merit raises every 6 mos (unheard of with the State...a RAISE?!? what is that?), the city pays for my uniforms, there are opportunities to advance (in-house vet clinic and animal control officer positions) and I can bring my dog or other animals in my care to work with me if I need to.
But here's the sacrifice...the pay is less than I make now...I'm going to have to resist the urge to buy many new reptiles...besides the last order I placed with Gino...that should tie me over for awhile until I get my raise in 6 months. and who knows maybe someone will surrender a gorgeous snake or two to the shelter while i'm there! it could happen!

Congratulations!! I took a 30% pay cut to move to Florida from Minnesota, and it took me five years to get to the salary I had when I left. But at least it doesn't snow here, and I found a cornsnake in my front yard!

yes at least it does not snow here. and this is my dream job. I did not expect to make the same pay as I do with the state. And it took some bargaining, but I was able to secure full benefits...that alone will make up for the pay cut. I spent a lot of money now on healthcare through the state. our healthcare premiums are high and increase every year.
And this job will be labor intensive...right now I hold up a desk in a cubicle and I hate it. I like being on my feet and I love animals.

Congrats on the new job! Both my daughters volunteer at our local Humane Society and have for almost 2 years now. They are hoping to soon get paying jobs there since they do pretty much everything the regular workers do without being paid for it. They love it there. Usually spend about 9 hours every saturday there cleaning cages, taking in animals, helping people who want to adopt animals. I hope they become as lucky as you and get thier dream job someday!

Good luck to your daughters, that's basically what I do there as a volunteer and I also run adoption booths around town. paid positions are scarce due to their tight budget.
